Not MS Dhoni! Moeen Ali Reveals the ‘Smartest Cricket Brain’ He’s Ever Worked With… And It’s Ashish Nehra

Former England all-rounder Moeen Ali has made a surprising choice while naming the smartest cricketing brain he has worked with, picking former India fast bowler Ashish Nehra ahead of legendary captain MS Dhoni.

Having shared the dressing room with several of cricket’s biggest names during an illustrious career, Moeen believes Nehra’s tactical awareness, analytical thinking and ability to manage players make him one of the finest minds in the game.

Moeen Picks Nehra Over Dhoni

Moeen spent three successful seasons with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) under the leadership of MS Dhoni, winning Indian Premier League (IPL) titles in 2021 and 2023.

Despite playing under one of cricket’s most celebrated tacticians, Moeen said Ashish Nehra stands out for the way he understands every aspect of the game.

Speaking on the Beard Before Wicket podcast, Moeen explained what, in his view, defines a great cricketing brain.“For me, a cricketing brain is somebody who knows almost every situation of the game. Someone who’s got an answer, or a theory, for every situation,” Moeen said.

He added that the best cricket minds are capable of analysing why players succeed or struggle and can predict how different situations may unfold during a match.

‘He Always Has Data Behind His Ideas’

Explaining why Nehra impressed him so much, Moeen said the former India pacer combines instinct with evidence-based decision-making.

According to the former England all-rounder, Nehra’s opinions are backed by statistics, previous experiences and detailed match analysis rather than guesswork.“He’s got something. And behind that something, there’s either data or evidence. It’s happened before, and this happened, and this is why this can happen,” Moeen said.

He also praised Nehra’s ability to build a positive dressing-room atmosphere and manage players effectively.“The name I am going to give is Ashish Nehra… Amazing, amazing cricket brain,” he added.

Working Together at RCB

Moeen and Nehra first worked together during their time with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL.

Nehra served as RCB’s bowling coach in 2018 and 2019, while Moeen was part of the franchise’s squad during the same period.

Although Nehra’s contributions received relatively little attention at the time, Moeen says those years allowed him to witness the coach’s tactical intelligence firsthand.

Ashish Nehra’s Successful Coaching Journey

After leaving RCB, Nehra was appointed head coach of the newly formed Gujarat Titans (GT) ahead of the IPL 2022 season.

His impact was immediate.

Under Nehra’s guidance, Gujarat Titans won the IPL title in their debut season before reaching another final in 2023, establishing themselves as one of the league’s strongest franchises.

Even after the departure of former captain Hardik Pandya to the Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2024 season, Gujarat Titans have remained among the most competitive teams in the tournament.

Nehra is now widely regarded as one of the IPL’s most respected coaches, with his calm leadership style, tactical planning and player management earning praise from current and former cricketers alike.

Moeen’s latest comments further reinforce that reputation, highlighting the growing recognition Nehra enjoys within international cricket circles.
