POCO X8 review: That massive 9,000mAh battery is hard to ignore, but should you buy it?

POCO has spent years building its identity in India’s smartphone market around a fairly straightforward formula: offer strong performance, big batteries and aggressive specifications without pushing prices too far.

With the POCO X8, that formula becomes even more obvious.

The smartphone’s headline feature is an enormous 9,000mAh silicon-carbon battery, but POCO hasn’t stopped there. The device also brings multiple IP ratings, Gorilla Glass Victus 2, a large 1.5K AMOLED display and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 chipset.

On paper, that sounds like a compelling package. In everyday use, however, the POCO X8’s strengths and compromises become easier to spot.

POCO X8 design: Toughness comes with extra weight

The first thing you are likely to notice about the POCO X8 is its size and weight. At 8.6mm thick and 226 grams, this isn’t a phone designed for people chasing an ultra-light handset.

That hefty battery inevitably adds some bulk, and prolonged one-handed use can become noticeable. On the other hand, the extra weight contributes to a reassuringly sturdy feel.

Durability is clearly one of POCO’s priorities. The handset features Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection and carries IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings, giving it an unusually extensive set of protection credentials.

The device is also claimed to have received dual five-star quality certifications from SGS and TÜV.

Other useful additions include an in-display fingerprint sensor, IR blaster, USB Type-C port and dual stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio support.

The result is a phone that feels reassuringly solid, although users who value thin and lightweight designs may find the 226-gram body difficult to overlook.

POCO X8 display: Impressive specifications, but there’s a catch

The POCO X8 features a large 6.83-inch 1.5K Super Sunlight AMOLED display with a 2772 × 1280-pixel resolution and refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

The panel supports 12-bit colour depth, a DCI-P3 wide colour gamut and a claimed peak brightness of up to 3,500 nits. POCO has also included Sunlight Display, TÜV Triple Eye Protection and Wet Touch 2.0.

For streaming videos, gaming and scrolling through social media, the large AMOLED panel is enjoyable. High brightness also helps when the phone is being used outdoors.

However, specifications don’t tell the entire story.

Despite the 120Hz refresh rate, interface animations don’t always feel as consistently fluid as those on more polished devices. Occasional stutters can appear while navigating HyperOS 3, slightly taking away from the premium impression created by the display hardware.

During testing, YouTube also unexpectedly closed on one occasion, suggesting that some additional software optimisation could improve the experience.

Gamers get an instant touch sampling rate of up to 3,200Hz through Game Turbo, which should help improve responsiveness during supported gaming scenarios.

Overall, this is a bright and capable display, but better software optimisation could make fuller use of its hardware.

Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 handles everyday work comfortably

Powering the POCO X8 is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6s Gen 4, manufactured using a 4nm process.

Its octa-core processor combines four Cortex-A78 cores clocked at up to 2.4GHz with four Cortex-A55 cores reaching 1.8GHz, alongside an Adreno GPU.

POCO claims an AnTuTu score exceeding 900,000.

In regular use, the chipset comfortably manages common activities such as social media, streaming, multitasking and gaming. It isn’t intended to compete directly with flagship processors, but there is enough performance here for most everyday users.

The smartphone is available with up to 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. Interestingly, storage technology differs depending on the configuration. The 128GB model uses UFS 2.2, while the 256GB version gets faster UFS 3.1 storage.

On the software side, the handset runs Xiaomi HyperOS 3 based on Android 16.

For buyers prioritising dependable everyday performance rather than benchmark-chasing flagship power, the X8 gets the basics right.

POCO X8 cameras: This is where compromises become obvious

If battery life is the POCO X8’s biggest strength, its camera system is arguably its clearest weakness.

The smartphone gets a 50MP primary camera with OIS and an f/1.8 aperture, accompanied by a 2MP depth sensor. A 16MP front camera handles selfies and video calls.

In good daylight, the primary camera can capture images with respectable detail, while optical image stabilisation provides some assistance with stability. Features including HDR, Portrait Mode, Live Moments, Ultra HD Mode, Panorama and Pro Mode are also available.

An Underwater Mode is expected through an OTA software update.

The limitations become apparent when you want more flexibility. There is no dedicated ultrawide or telephoto camera, leaving the 50MP main sensor to do most of the work.

Daylight photographs can look sharp, although colours aren’t always entirely natural. Low-light performance is more average, with visible noise creeping into darker scenes.

The 2MP depth sensor adds limited practical value, while portrait edge detection can occasionally be inconsistent.

Video recording is another area where expectations should be kept in check, with both the front and rear cameras supporting up to 1080p at 30fps.

Photography enthusiasts therefore have good reason to consider alternatives.

9,000mAh battery is the POCO X8’s real party trick

Then we arrive at the feature that makes the POCO X8 stand out: its enormous 9,000mAh silicon-carbon battery.

For heavy smartphone users, this capacity can fundamentally change how often they think about charging. Long sessions of video streaming, gaming, social media and everyday apps become less stressful when there’s such a substantial battery reserve available.

The handset supports 67W HyperCharge, with a compatible 67W charger included in the box.

It can also provide up to 22.5W wired reverse charging, effectively allowing the POCO X8 to supply power to other compatible devices when needed.

POCO has additionally equipped the phone with Xiaomi’s Surge G1 battery management chip.

Charging times and endurance will naturally vary depending on usage patterns, network conditions, temperature and other factors, but battery hardware is unquestionably the strongest part of this package.

POCO X8 verdict: Should you buy it?

The POCO X8 knows exactly what kind of buyer it wants.

Its combination of a 9,000mAh battery, 67W fast charging, reverse charging, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and extensive IP protection makes it particularly attractive for people who value endurance and durability.

The Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 also provides dependable performance for everyday use and moderate gaming.

But this isn’t an all-round flagship killer.

Its 226-gram weight will be noticeable for users accustomed to lighter devices. The AMOLED display has impressive specifications, but software animations could feel smoother. More importantly, the basic dual-camera arrangement leaves photography enthusiasts with fewer options than some competing smartphones.

Buy the POCO X8 if battery endurance, rugged construction and dependable everyday performance are at the top of your priority list.

If you care more about a lightweight design, polished software experience, versatile cameras or strong low-light photography, it may be worth comparing other options before making the purchase.

The 9,000mAh battery gives the POCO X8 a genuinely distinctive selling point the question is whether you’re willing to accept its compromises to get it.
