Prime Minister Narendra Modi addresses the Parliament of Seychelles in Victoria, highlighting deep-rooted cultural and historical ties.

Narendra Modi delivered a historic address to the Parliament of Seychelles in Victoria, becoming the first Indian Prime Minister to do so. His speech was not just political—it carried a deeply emotional and cultural resonance rooted in centuries-old ties between the two nations.

Opening his address, Modi reflected on the shared history between India and Seychelles, tracing it back over 250 years. He spoke about the arrival of the first Indians in August 1770 aboard the ship Thélemaque at Ste Anne Island, marking the beginning of a relationship that has only strengthened with time.

He emphasized that these ties were not merely the result of diplomatic agreements but were built organically through generations of human connection. “Our friendship did not begin 50 years ago… It began much earlier… built by people, nurtured by families, and sustained by generations,” Modi said, underlining the depth of the bond.

Adding a cultural touch to his speech, Modi referenced familiar elements of Indian heritage thriving in Seychelles—“samosas, celebration of Deepavali, and Garba dance during Navratri”—painting a vivid picture of shared traditions that transcend borders.

In one of the most striking lines of his address, Modi said, “The Indian Ocean does not separate India and Seychelles. It connects us… we meet not as strangers, but as old friends.” The statement drew attention to the strategic as well as emotional importance of the Indian Ocean in shaping bilateral ties.

The Prime Minister further noted that partnerships like India-Seychelles are rare, built on “warmth, trust, and goodwill”—qualities that he urged both nations to preserve and strengthen in the years ahead.

Reaffirming India’s commitment, Modi concluded with a powerful assurance: “India will remain your trusted partner… We will stand beside you as friends.”

This address marked Modi’s 20th speech to a foreign parliament, reflecting his continued emphasis on strengthening India’s global diplomatic footprint since assuming office in 2014.

For India, Seychelles holds strategic importance in the Indian Ocean region, and this visit further cements the growing partnership between the two nations—not just politically, but culturally and historically.
