“What Else?”: The One Question Pranab Mukherjee Asked PM Modi After BJP’s Historic 2014 Win
Sharmistha Mukherjee recalls a fascinating moment between Narendra Modi and Pranab Mukherjee, shedding light on the making of ‘Brand Modi’ and the political shift that changed India forever.
New Delhi: Politics is often shaped by moments hidden away from the public eye — conversations that later define history. One such moment has now resurfaced, thanks to Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of former President Pranab Mukherjee, who shared a compelling memory from the days following the landmark 2014 Lok Sabha election.
As Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently completed 12 uninterrupted years in office, becoming India’s longest-serving elected head of government, Sharmistha revisited a fascinating exchange between Modi and her father that highlighted the depth of that historic mandate.
According to Sharmistha, after the BJP’s emphatic 2014 victory, Modi visited Rashtrapati Bhavan to meet then-President Pranab Mukherjee. During their conversation, Mukherjee asked Modi how he interpreted the massive electoral win.
Modi reportedly pointed to one major fact — that after nearly three decades, a single political party had secured a full majority in the Lok Sabha.
But Pranab Mukherjee wasn’t satisfied.
In what Sharmistha described as his signature “professorial style,” the veteran statesman posed a simple yet powerful follow-up: “What else?”
That question, Sharmistha suggests, carried a deeper political truth.
She explained that the 2014 election was unlike any other in modern Indian history because it was fought with a clearly declared prime ministerial face. Unlike earlier elections where leadership often emerged after the results, the BJP had put Modi front and center — turning the contest into a direct appeal to voters.
For Pranab Mukherjee, this meant the mandate was not merely for the BJP, but for Modi himself.
Sharmistha, in her reflections, emphasized that this was the birth of what many now call “Brand Modi” — a political identity powerful enough to transcend party lines and redefine electoral politics in India.
She also highlighted Modi’s unique journey, noting that before 2014, he was primarily known as Gujarat’s long-serving Chief Minister and had limited direct experience in national politics. Yet his ability to connect with the masses transformed him into a national phenomenon.

One of the most unforgettable moments of that transition came when Modi, entering Parliament for the first time as Prime Minister, bowed down at its steps in a gesture of respect.
Sharmistha described the act as deeply emotional and symbolic — one that resonated with millions across the country.

Despite their ideological differences, Pranab Mukherjee and Modi maintained a warm and respectful relationship, something Sharmistha says reflected the essence of democracy.
Her conclusion was sharp and striking: “You may love or hate Modi, but you simply cannot ignore Brand Modi.”
More than a decade later, with victories in 2019 and again in 2024 reinforcing his political dominance, that observation appears more relevant than ever.
Whether admired or criticized, Narendra Modi remains one of the most defining political figures of modern India — a leader whose influence continues to shape the nation’s democratic journey.
