‘Why Didn’t You Tell Me First?’: Matt Damon Reveals Wife Luciana’s Funny Reaction to His The Odyssey Casting
The Hollywood star admits his first call after landing Christopher Nolan’s epic role didn’t go as planned, leading to a light-hearted moment with wife Luciana Damon.
Matt Damon has shared a humorous behind-the-scenes story from the moment he landed the lead role in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated film The Odyssey and it involves an unexpected complaint from his wife, Luciana Damon.
During an appearance on 100 Questions with Tom Simons, the Oscar-winning actor revealed that although he tried to inform Luciana first about the career-defining news, circumstances led to someone else hearing it before she did.
The Call That Went Unanswered
Damon explained that after officially securing the role of Odysseus, he immediately tried to call his wife.
However, Luciana was in the middle of a Zoom meeting and couldn’t answer the phone.
Unable to share the exciting news with her, Damon decided to call one of his closest friends and longtime collaborator, Ben Affleck.
The actor recalled that Affleck was thrilled about the casting and spent nearly half an hour celebrating the news over the phone.
Luciana’s Surprise Text
Things took an amusing turn shortly afterwards.
According to Damon, he received a text message from Luciana asking,“Why didn’t you tell me first?”
As it turned out, Ben Affleck and Luciana Damon happened to be in the same building at the time. After speaking with Matt, Affleck reportedly rushed into Luciana’s office and enthusiastically shared the news himself.
Although the situation was all in good humour, Damon admitted it left his wife disappointed that she hadn’t heard the announcement directly from him first.
A Love Story Spanning Two Decades
Matt Damon and Luciana Damon have been married since December 2005, making this year their 20th wedding anniversary.
Before their marriage, Luciana had a daughter, Alexia, from her previous relationship with Arbello Barroso. Damon later adopted Alexia, and the couple went on to welcome three daughters together Isabella, Gia, and Stella.

Over the years, the pair have often spoken about the strong foundation of their relationship and how they prioritise family despite Damon’s demanding Hollywood career.
How Their Romance Began
Luciana has previously shared the story of how they first met while she was working at a bar.
In an interview with Vogue, she recalled that Damon stepped behind the counter after being recognised by customers, putting his bartending training from an earlier film role to good use.

She joked that his unexpected appearance helped her earn generous tips that evening, turning what could have been a hectic night into a memorable one.
Luciana also revealed that she initially declined Damon’s invitation to continue the evening because she wanted to return home to care for her young daughter.
According to her, Damon’s admiration for her commitment to motherhood only strengthened their connection, laying the foundation for a relationship that has now lasted two decades.
Excitement Builds Around The Odyssey
The story surfaced as anticipation continues to grow for Christopher Nolan’s ambitious adaptation of The Odyssey, which features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and several other Hollywood stars.
For Damon, the project marks another major collaboration with one of cinema’s most acclaimed directors and, as he jokingly discovered, one unforgettable story to tell at home as well.
