CRED founder Kunal Shah has been appointed as the new global head of WhatsApp, marking a major leadership shift at Meta.

In a major leadership shake-up in the global tech world, Meta has announced the appointment of Kunal Shah, founder of CRED, as the new global head of WhatsApp. He will replace Will Cathcart, who has led the messaging giant for nearly seven years.

The move marks a significant moment not just for Meta, but also for India’s startup ecosystem, as one of its most recognized entrepreneurs steps into a global leadership role at one of the world’s most widely used communication platforms.

Sharing the news on LinkedIn, Kunal Shah confirmed that he would be stepping away from his day-to-day responsibilities at CRED, with Miten Sampat taking over as interim CEO.

In his post, Shah wrote that CRED is now prepared for its next phase of growth and expressed confidence in the leadership team carrying the company forward.

But who exactly is Kunal Shah, and how did he reach this stage?

Born and raised in Mumbai, Shah studied Philosophy at Wilson College before enrolling at NMIMS (Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies). However, he eventually dropped out to pursue entrepreneurship.

His first major breakthrough came in 2010 when he founded FreeCharge, a digital payments and recharge platform. The startup quickly became a household name and was later acquired by Snapdeal in 2015 in a deal worth nearly $450 million, making it one of India’s biggest startup exits at the time.

After leaving FreeCharge in 2016, Shah transitioned into the startup ecosystem as an investor and advisor. He worked briefly with Y Combinator, served as chairman of the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), and advised top venture capital firms including Sequoia Capital.

In 2018, Shah launched CRED, investing $1 million of his own capital to kickstart the fintech platform. Initially focused on rewarding users for timely credit card bill payments, CRED quickly expanded into sectors like lending, insurance, wealth management, and commerce, becoming one of India’s most talked-about fintech brands.

Beyond his ventures, Shah has also served on the boards of companies like Syrma SGS Technology and Pine Labs, while mentoring and investing in startups such as Razorpay, Unacademy, Spinny, Go-Jek, Rupeek, and Mobile Premier League.

His appointment at WhatsApp is seen as a strategic move by Meta, especially at a time when the platform is aggressively expanding its focus on payments, business messaging, and AI-driven communication tools.

With over 2 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp remains one of Meta’s most critical products. And with Kunal Shah now at the helm, many in the tech world will be watching closely to see what changes and innovations lie ahead.
