The electric SUV market in India is about to get another interesting contender. The Jaecoo J5 EV, which has already been spotted testing in the country, has now been fully unveiled at the 2026 Indonesia Motor Show, giving prospective Indian buyers their clearest look yet at the upcoming electric SUV.

The reveal is particularly significant because Indonesia, like India, follows a right-hand-drive layout. That means the model displayed at the motor show is expected to closely resemble the version that could eventually arrive on Indian roads.

Boxy styling gives the J5 EV a distinctive identity

The first thing likely to catch attention is the SUV’s upright and boxy silhouette. Unlike some modern electric vehicles that rely heavily on futuristic styling, the Jaecoo J5 EV takes a more conventional SUV approach while adding several EV-specific touches.

At the front, the SUV features a closed-off grille, while the side profile gets dual-tone alloy wheels with aerodynamic inserts. The Jaecoo badge sits on a carbon-fibre-style accent, adding a sporty touch to the exterior.

The charging port is positioned on the front right fender, making it easy to identify the vehicle as an electric model. The SUV also rides on 18-inch tyres, giving it a relatively substantial road presence.

A minimalist cabin with plenty of technology

Inside, the Jaecoo J5 EV follows a clean and minimalist approach. The cabin is finished in an all-black theme and features fabric upholstery.

The dashboard gets a large 13.2-inch infotainment display, while other notable equipment includes Type-C charging ports, 64-colour ambient lighting and dual-zone automatic climate control.

Under the skin, the Jaecoo J5 EV gets a front-wheel-drive electric motor producing 207bhp and 288Nm of torque. The motor is paired with a 61kWh battery pack.

According to the figures revealed so far, the SUV has a claimed driving range of 407km. The 0-100kmph sprint is completed in a claimed 7.3 seconds, suggesting that the J5 EV is not being positioned as a slow, purely urban-focused electric vehicle.

Charging support includes 11kW AC charging and up to 130kW DC fast charging. The latter could make longer journeys more convenient by reducing charging downtime, although the actual charging time for the Indian-spec model will be confirmed closer to launch.

Expected India price could make it a strong rival

The Jaecoo J5 EV is expected to be positioned below the ₹20 lakh mark in India, with an estimated starting price of around ₹18 lakh.

If the pricing remains competitive, the upcoming electric SUV could enter a segment that is becoming increasingly crowded.
