Apple MacBook & iPad Prices Jump Up to 42% in India Amid AI Chip Demand Surge
Apple MacBook Pro and iPad Air prices surge in India as global AI-driven chip demand pushes up memory costs.

New Delhi: In a move that has surprised many loyal customers, Apple Inc. has sharply increased prices of its popular devices — including MacBook and iPad — by nearly 20% to 42% across global markets, with India also seeing a direct impact.

The price revision, which appears on Apple India’s official listings, comes at a time when the tech industry is grappling with a steep rise in memory and storage costs driven by the global AI expansion.

MacBook Pro crosses ₹3 lakh mark

One of the most noticeable hikes has been in Apple’s premium laptop segment. The 14-inch MacBook Pro powered by the M5 Pro chip now costs ₹2,99,900, up from its earlier launch price of ₹2,49,900 — a jump of nearly 20%.

This increase pushes Apple’s high-end MacBook lineup further into ultra-premium territory, making it increasingly out of reach for many buyers in India’s growing creative and professional markets.

iPad Air sees massive 41% price jump

Even more striking is the price surge in Apple’s tablet lineup. The 13-inch iPad Air has jumped from ₹84,900 to ₹1,19,900, marking a steep increase of over 41%.

For many users who rely on the iPad ecosystem for design, education, and business tasks, this sudden revision has significantly altered buying decisions.

Why is Apple increasing prices? The AI factor

In an official statement, Apple explained that the global surge in demand for memory chips — largely driven by the rapid expansion of AI data centres — has created unprecedented pressure on supply chains.

The company said:

“We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly… we are now at a point where we need to begin raising prices.”

Apple also admitted that while it had earlier absorbed these costs, the continued escalation has made it impossible to maintain earlier pricing.

Tim Cook had warned this shift earlier

Back in April, Tim Cook had already hinted at this situation during an investor call, noting that rising memory costs were expected to hit margins by the end of the year.

He had clearly stated that the company was preparing for “significantly higher memory costs,” a warning that now appears to be materialising across product lines.

Global trend: not just Apple

Apple is not alone in this situation. Across the consumer electronics industry, prices of gadgets are reportedly rising by 30% to 40%, as manufacturers compete with AI infrastructure companies for limited semiconductor and memory supply.

Industry analysts say companies are prioritising AI data centres, leaving less capacity for consumer devices like laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

What this means for Indian buyers

For Indian consumers, the impact is direct and immediate. With Apple products already positioned in the premium segment, these additional hikes may further push buyers toward:

  • Older-generation MacBooks
  • Refurbished Apple devices
  • Or competing Windows and Android alternatives

Retail experts also expect festive-season demand to soften if prices remain elevated.

A new reality for premium tech

The latest price revision signals a broader shift in the global tech ecosystem — where AI infrastructure is now dictating consumer electronics pricing.

What was once a stable upgrade cycle for Apple users is now being reshaped by external supply pressures beyond product innovation itself.
