iPhone 18 Could Get a Surprise RAM Boost as Apple Bets Big on AI—But There’s One Catch…
A new report suggests Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e may receive more RAM, faster chips and smarter AI features, while some advanced Apple Intelligence tools could still remain exclusive to premium models.
New Delhi: Apple Inc. appears to be preparing a major upgrade for its next-generation smartphones, with fresh reports indicating that the upcoming iPhone 18 lineup will place a stronger focus on artificial intelligence and on-device performance.
According to noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the standard iPhone 18 and the expected iPhone 18e could arrive with 9GB of RAM, marking an improvement over the 8GB RAM found in their predecessors. While the increase may seem modest on paper, it is expected to play a crucial role in handling Apple’s expanding AI-powered features.
More RAM to Power Apple Intelligence
Apple has been steadily integrating artificial intelligence across its ecosystem through Apple Intelligence. Many of these features process data directly on the device rather than relying on cloud servers, making memory capacity increasingly important.
The report suggests that the iPhone 18 series may adopt a new 1.5GB × 6-die memory configuration, resulting in a total of 9GB of RAM. Combined with Apple’s next-generation A20 chipset, reportedly built using an advanced 2-nanometre manufacturing process, users could experience smoother AI processing, faster multitasking and improved overall efficiency.
A20 Pro Chip Expected for Premium Models
While the standard iPhone 18 is expected to use the A20 processor, Apple’s premium devices—including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the rumoured iPhone Ultra/Fold—could receive the more powerful A20 Pro chip.

Previous industry leaks indicate that the upgraded processor may deliver up to 15% better performance while improving power efficiency by nearly 30%, helping users enjoy longer battery life alongside enhanced processing capabilities.
iOS 27 Could Make Siri Smarter Than Ever
The report also points to iOS 27 bringing deeper integration with Apple Intelligence. Apple recently showcased the operating system during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), unveiling a redesigned Siri, AI-powered upgrades for the Camera and Photos apps, and a dedicated Siri chatbot experience.
Many of these intelligent features run entirely on the device, reducing reliance on cloud computing while improving privacy.
However, Apple has confirmed that some of its most advanced on-device AI tools require at least 12GB of RAM. This means that although the iPhone 18 is expected to receive a RAM upgrade, certain premium AI features could still remain exclusive to higher-end models with larger memory configurations.
What Else Can Buyers Expect?
Apart from internal upgrades, the standard iPhone 18 is expected to retain display dimensions similar to the current generation while introducing a slimmer Dynamic Island, a design element that may first debut on the Pro models.

Reports also suggest improvements including:
- A brighter display for improved outdoor visibility.
- A 24-megapixel front camera for sharper selfies and better video calls.
- Apple’s second-generation C2 modem with faster mmWave 5G connectivity.
- Enhanced privacy through a feature designed to limit precise location data shared with mobile carriers.
- A simplified Camera Control button that relies solely on pressure-sensitive input instead of capacitive touch.
Balancing Features and Cost
Industry reports indicate Apple could also make selective compromises to keep manufacturing costs under control. The standard iPhone 18 may feature a slightly lower-spec display, a version of the A20 chip with fewer graphics cores and share several internal components with the rumoured iPhone 18e.
If these reports prove accurate, Apple appears to be following a strategy that offers meaningful AI improvements without significantly increasing the price of its mainstream iPhone models.
Although Apple has yet to officially confirm these specifications, expectations surrounding the iPhone 18 continue to grow. With artificial intelligence becoming a central part of the smartphone experience, the next generation of iPhones could represent one of Apple’s biggest software-driven upgrades in years.
