Inside Amitabh Bachchan’s ‘Jalsa’: The untold story of the ₹120 Crore home that became Mumbai’s most famous address

In the heart of Mumbai’s bustling streets lies Jalsa, the elegant residence of Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan and his family. While the city is home to famous celebrity addresses like Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat and the towering Antilia, Jalsa holds a unique place in the hearts of fans.

For over two decades, this grand bungalow has served as the Bachchan family’s main residence, carrying not just luxury but a legacy of stardom. Estimated to be worth between ₹100 crore and ₹120 crore, Jalsa is a reflection of timeless elegance and cinematic history.

Reports suggest some of its intricate rugs have origins in Turkey, adding an international touch to its décor. Alongside the lavish living spaces, the home also includes private study rooms, modern kitchens, and a fully-equipped personal gym.

But what truly makes Jalsa special is its rare outdoor space — something almost impossible to find in Mumbai’s packed urban landscape. The sprawling lawns, lined with trees and greenery, offer the family a peaceful retreat away from the city’s chaos and the constant media attention.

Interestingly, Jalsa wasn’t bought by Amitabh Bachchan himself. The home was gifted to him by veteran filmmaker Ramesh Sippy after being impressed by his stellar performance in the 1982 cult film Satte Pe Satta.

Initially, the bungalow was registered under Ramola Bachchan, wife of Amitabh’s brother Ajitabh Bachchan. Later in 2006, ownership was officially transferred to Jaya Bachchan.

The name ‘Jalsa’ itself means celebration, and in many ways, it perfectly captures the journey of this house from a gift of appreciation to becoming one of Mumbai’s most iconic landmarks.
