Sunny Deol’s ‘Batwara 1947’ Cleared by CBFC Without cuts ahead of Release Big Boost before Independence Day clash

Sunny Deol’s much-awaited period drama Batwara 1947 has reportedly crossed a major milestone ahead of its theatrical release. According to recent reports, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has granted the film a censor certificate without recommending any cuts, giving the makers a smooth path to cinemas just weeks before its release.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan, the Partition-era drama is scheduled to hit theatres on August 14, 2026, a day before India’s Independence Day.

CBFC Gives Green Signal Without Any Cuts

According to reports, the CBFC’s examining committee cleared the final version of Batwara 1947 without seeking any edits or modifications.

Receiving an uncut certification is being viewed as a positive development for the makers, especially considering the sensitive historical backdrop of the film. The certification also clears the way for promotional activities to intensify as the release date approaches.

Why the Film’s Title Was Changed

Interestingly, the project was initially announced as Lahore 1947 before the makers decided to rename it Batwara 1947.

The title change reportedly came in view of possible political sensitivities and geopolitical concerns surrounding India-Pakistan relations. While the story remains unchanged, the new title places greater emphasis on the emotional and historical impact of the 1947 Partition.

A Special Reunion After Three Decades

The film marks the long-awaited reunion of Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi, who previously delivered memorable films such as Ghayal, Damini, and Ghatak.

It is also the first collaboration between Sunny Deol and Aamir Khan, with the latter backing the project as producer.

Another major highlight is the return of Karan Deol, who plays an important role in the film. It marks his comeback to the big screen after Velle (2021).

Inspired by a Celebrated Stage Play

Reports suggest that Batwara 1947 draws inspiration from noted playwright Asghar Wajahat’s acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai.

Set against the turbulent backdrop of the Partition of India, the film explores the emotional aftermath of communal violence, displacement and the human cost of one of the most significant chapters in the subcontinent’s history.

Power-Packed Cast and Music

The film features an impressive ensemble led by Sunny Deol, Preity Zinta, and Shabana Azmi.

Supporting roles are played by Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, Kanikka Kapur, and Parminder Singh Kanth.

Adding further star power, the film’s music has been composed by A.R. Rahman, with lyrics written by Javed Akhtar, while celebrated cinematographer Santosh Sivan has handled the visuals.

Box Office Clash on August 14

Batwara 1947 is set for a high-profile box office battle as it will release alongside Emraan Hashmi and Disha Patani starrer Awarapan 2 on August 14, 2026.

With a clean censor certificate already in hand and strong anticipation surrounding the project, all eyes will now be on whether Sunny Deol can recreate the success of his previous blockbuster Gadar 2 with another emotionally charged Partition drama.
