Where Is Divya Spandana Now? From Kannada Cinema Star to Politics Here’s What Ramya Is Doing Today
Once one of Kannada cinema’s biggest female stars and later a Member of Parliament, Divya Spandana, popularly known as Ramya, has largely stepped away from the spotlight. But she hasn’t disappeared — her journey has simply taken another turn.
For years, Divya Spandana, better known by her screen name Ramya, was a familiar face across Kannada cinema. From starring opposite some of the industry’s biggest names to entering national politics, she built a career that few actors have managed to replicate.
But fans who remember Ramya from her peak years may have one question today: Where is Divya Spandana now?
The answer is more interesting than simply saying she left films or politics. Divya has gradually reshaped her public life, moving towards film production, carefully chosen acting opportunities and issues she believes deserve greater attention.
From ‘Abhi’ to Becoming One of Sandalwood’s Leading Stars
Divya made her film debut in Abhi opposite Puneeth Rajkumar, beginning a journey that would eventually establish her as one of the most recognisable actresses in the Kannada film industry.
Her popularity was not restricted to Karnataka. She also worked in Tamil cinema, appearing in notable films including Polladhavan and Vaaranam Aayiram.
At a time when her acting career was flourishing, however, Divya surprised many by choosing an entirely different path politics.
Ramya’s Dramatic Move From Films to Parliament
Divya joined the Youth Congress in 2012 and soon moved from campaigning to contesting elections herself.
In 2013, she won the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency in a by-election, becoming a Member of Parliament. Her victory marked a major transformation from popular movie star to elected political representative.
She contested from Mandya again during the 2014 Lok Sabha election, but was unable to retain the seat.
Her political journey, however, did not end there.
In 2017, Divya took charge of the Congress party’s social media and digital communications operation, placing her at the centre of the party’s online political strategy.
Why Did Divya Spandana Step Away From Active Politics?
Following the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Divya largely withdrew from her high-profile political responsibilities and spent an extended period away from active politics.
She later returned to the campaign trail as one of the Congress star campaigners during the 2023 Karnataka Assembly elections.
Despite that appearance, she did not return to full-time electoral politics, signalling that her priorities had shifted.
And eventually, those priorities brought her back to the world where her public journey had started — cinema.
Divya Spandana Returned to Films, But With a Major Twist
Rather than immediately making a conventional comeback as a leading actress, Divya decided to explore filmmaking from behind the camera.
She launched AppleBox Studios and entered film production. The banner produced the Kannada film Swathi Mutthina Male Haniye, directed by Raj B Shetty.
The move showed that Divya’s connection with cinema remained strong even though she was no longer regularly appearing as an actress.
Fans did get a rare opportunity to see her on screen again when she made a cameo appearance in Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare.

That appearance naturally revived speculation about whether Ramya could make a full-fledged acting comeback.
Is Ramya Planning a Proper Acting Comeback?
For fans hoping to see Divya return as a leading actress, the door has not been completely closed.
But she appears determined not to return simply because audiences want to see her again.
Speaking to Cinema Express in 2025, Divya said, “My comeback is still a big question mark. I’m actively listening to scripts, and I’m hoping to find the right one soon.”
Her comments suggested that the decision would ultimately depend on the quality of the role and script, rather than the pressure to remain visible.
After spending years in both cinema and politics, Divya appears to have reached a stage where being selective matters more than simply being in the spotlight.

A New Focus Beyond Films and Politics
Divya has also increasingly used her public platform to discuss issues beyond entertainment and electoral politics.
One area she has spoken about is women’s health, including greater awareness around menopause and perimenopause.
Her advocacy reflects another evolution in a career that has already taken several unexpected turns from actress to politician, digital strategist, producer and public advocate.
So, Where Is Divya Spandana Today?
Divya Spandana has not disappeared from public life. She has simply changed how she participates in it.
She remains connected to the Kannada film industry through production, continues to consider acting scripts and has kept open the possibility of returning to the screen when the right project arrives.
At the same time, she has not resumed the kind of full-time political career that once made her one of the most prominent actor-politicians in Karnataka.
For audiences who knew her as Ramya, the actress who ruled Kannada screens, or as Divya Spandana, the politician who entered Parliament, her current chapter is considerably quieter but perhaps more deliberate.
The big question now is not whether Ramya will return, but what kind of role could finally convince her to step fully in front of the camera again?
