Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may be only 15, but the teenager is already preparing for the next big challenge in his cricketing journey.

The young Indian batter recently shared a short training video on Instagram showing him working in the nets ahead of the upcoming Duleep Trophy. His caption had just two words — “Preparation On” — but the simple message quickly caught the attention of cricket fans on social media.

The video showed Sooryavanshi working on both defensive and attacking strokes as he prepares for the demands of first-class cricket.

And this time, there is an added responsibility waiting for him.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi named East Zone vice-captain

Sooryavanshi has been appointed vice-captain of East Zone for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, with experienced wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan set to lead the side.

The appointment does not make Sooryavanshi the team’s captain, but selectors believe the youngster is ready to take on greater responsibility.

East Zone selector Pravanjan Mullick explained that Kishan’s role as captain will remain important throughout the match because of his wicketkeeping duties.

According to Mullick, Sooryavanshi’s elevation to the vice-captaincy is part of a broader effort to give young cricketers leadership experience at an early stage.

Why selectors trust the 15-year-old

Sooryavanshi already has some experience of handling leadership responsibilities despite his age.

He has served as Bihar’s vice-captain in first-class cricket and was also part of India’s leadership group during the U19 World Cup campaign.

That background appears to have influenced the East Zone selectors’ decision.

Mullick described the Duleep Trophy assignment as an opportunity for Sooryavanshi to learn how to handle responsibility while competing against experienced domestic cricketers.

For a player whose career has developed at remarkable speed, the tournament could provide another important learning experience.

From white-ball sensation to red-ball challenge

The biggest focus for Sooryavanshi right now, however, appears to be red-ball cricket.

After returning from India’s tour of Zimbabwe in July, the teenager shifted his attention towards preparing for the multi-day format.

He has reportedly been spending significant time at the Rajasthan Royals Academy in Talegaon, near Nagpur, working on the technical aspects required for longer-format cricket.

The academy serves as a centre-of-excellence-style facility for the Rajasthan Royals, and Sooryavanshi has been training there alongside several of his franchise teammates.

The emphasis is understandable. Success in T20 cricket demands a different skill set from the patience, concentration and technical discipline required in first-class cricket.

‘Preparation On’ — but the bigger test is coming

Sooryavanshi’s two-word Instagram caption may have been simple, but it perfectly sums up his current phase.

The teenager is no longer preparing only for the excitement of short-format cricket. He is now being challenged to demonstrate that his batting can translate into the traditional format as well.

The Duleep Trophy will provide him with an opportunity to spend extended time at the crease, face quality domestic bowling and learn what it takes to build an innings over several hours and potentially multiple days.

Being named vice-captain adds another layer to that challenge.

At 15, Sooryavanshi will be surrounded by players with considerably more experience, including captain Ishan Kishan. The responsibility could give him valuable exposure to the tactical and leadership side of the game.

For now, though, the youngster appears focused on one thing — preparation.

And if his latest Instagram post is anything to go by, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is already ready for the next chapter.
