The newly inaugurated Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport is expected to transform North Andhra by boosting connectivity, tourism, trade, and industrial development.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district, marking a major milestone in Andhra Pradesh’s aviation infrastructure.
Built at an investment of nearly ₹5,000 crore, the airport is expected to become a key gateway for North Andhra, improving regional connectivity while supporting economic growth, tourism, exports, and employment opportunities.
The project has been developed by GMR Group and is considered one of the state’s most significant infrastructure developments in recent years.
Commercial Flights to Begin From August 17
While the airport has now been formally inaugurated, commercial flight operations are scheduled to commence on August 17.
The new airport will initially have the capacity to handle six million passengers annually during its first phase of operations.
According to the long-term master plan, the airport’s capacity can eventually be expanded to 40 million passengers every year, making it one of the largest aviation hubs in eastern India over the coming decades.

More Than Just an Airport
The Andhra Pradesh Government sees the Bhogapuram Airport as far more than a transportation project.
State officials believe the airport will act as a catalyst for economic transformation across North Andhra, encouraging investments in manufacturing, logistics, exports, tourism, research, and skill development.
Improved air connectivity is also expected to attract new businesses and industries to the region while creating employment opportunities for local residents.
The project is part of Andhra Pradesh’s broader strategy to strengthen infrastructure and position the state as an investment destination.

PM Modi Reviews Airport Features
During the inauguration ceremony, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu briefed Prime Minister Modi on the airport’s key features and long-term development plans.
The leaders highlighted the airport’s role in strengthening regional connectivity and supporting future economic expansion.
Infrastructure Push Continues
Following the airport inauguration, Prime Minister Modi is also scheduled to lay the foundation stone and inaugurate multiple development projects worth nearly ₹18,000 crore across Andhra Pradesh.
These projects span several sectors and are aimed at improving infrastructure, connectivity, and economic development in the state.
A New Aviation Hub for North Andhra
The launch of Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport represents a significant boost for Andhra Pradesh’s aviation network.
With commercial services beginning on August 17, the airport is expected to reduce travel time, improve domestic and international connectivity, and support the region’s growing industrial and tourism potential.
As passenger traffic increases in the coming years, the airport is also expected to play an important role in driving investment and accelerating economic growth across North Andhra.
