NEET-UG paper leak controversy triggers major action as NTA removes 47 officials and announces reforms to rebuild trust in India’s exam system.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has taken a major step following the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG paper leak case, terminating 47 officials as part of a sweeping internal crackdown. The agency is also preparing to initiate legal and criminal action against officials allegedly linked to irregularities, according to senior officials.

The move comes at a time when students across the country continue to protest against alleged examination failures and demand accountability from authorities. The issue has triggered widespread criticism of the NTA, which conducts several major entrance examinations in India, including NEET-UG.

A senior government official said that the examination body is now heading towards a complete transformation. “The NTA is set to undergo an overhaul and more reformative measures will follow,” the official stated, adding that strict action would be taken against those found responsible.

The development follows the transfer of Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi to the Panchayati Raj Ministry, amid growing concerns over the handling of examination-related issues.

The controversy has intensified after allegations of paper leaks, evaluation problems, and administrative lapses created anger among students and parents. Large-scale demonstrations have been reported at Jantar Mantar in Delhi and several other locations across the country, with protesters demanding transparency and reforms.

To strengthen its functioning, the NTA has also started the process of hiring experienced professionals. The agency has announced recruitment for senior-level positions, including General Manager posts, and has opened opportunities for young professionals through the Union Public Service Commission’s Pratibha Setu portal.

Among the newly advertised positions, four General Manager roles will be filled on a contractual basis for an initial period of three years. These appointments are aimed at improving the agency’s technical and academic systems.

One key position will focus on Assessment Research and Development and Psychometrics, responsible for areas such as question banks, examination methodology, result normalisation, calibration systems, and advanced testing models.

The latest action signals a major reset for the National Testing Agency, which is under pressure to rebuild confidence among millions of students preparing for competitive examinations. With stricter monitoring, new appointments, and possible criminal proceedings, the government aims to bring greater transparency to India’s examination process.
