Kevin De Bruyne to Inter Miami? Lionel Messi Reunion Appears Off the Table as MLS Rumours Lose Steam

Speculation over a blockbuster reunion between Kevin De Bruyne and Lionel Messi at Inter Miami appears to be fading, with reports indicating that the Major League Soccer (MLS) club has not held any discussions with the Belgian midfielder or his representatives.

The rumours gathered momentum after De Bruyne endured a difficult first season at Napoli, prompting suggestions that the veteran playmaker could seek a fresh challenge in the United States. However, sources close to Inter Miami have reportedly dismissed claims of any ongoing negotiations.

Inter Miami Not Pursuing De Bruyne

The possibility of De Bruyne joining a star-studded Inter Miami side featuring Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Rodrigo De Paul, and Casemiro generated excitement among football fans.

However, senior figures at the MLS club have reportedly denied having any contact with the Belgian international regarding a potential transfer.

Other American clubs, including Chicago Fire and San Diego FC, have also been linked with De Bruyne, but reports suggest no concrete negotiations have taken place with either franchise.

According to Belgian transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri, De Bruyne and his family have decided to remain in Napoli for at least one more season.

A Challenging First Season in Italy

De Bruyne joined Napoli on a free transfer after ending his illustrious spell at Manchester City.

His debut campaign in Serie A, however, proved frustrating.

A serious thigh injury that required surgery in October kept him sidelined for several months, while adapting to Napoli’s tactical approach also became a challenge.

Under former manager Antonio Conte, Napoli adopted a disciplined, defence-first style that differed significantly from De Bruyne’s preferred attacking philosophy.

The Belgian midfielder openly admitted that he struggled to fit into the system.”Conte has a very different vision of football than I do. We play very defensively.”

Although Conte has since left the club, his successor Massimiliano Allegri is also known for his pragmatic tactical approach, leaving questions over how comfortably De Bruyne will fit into the new setup.

World Cup Performances Proved His Class

Despite club-level difficulties, De Bruyne once again showcased his quality during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Captaining Belgium, the experienced midfielder helped guide the Red Devils to the quarter-finals before they were eliminated 2-1 by Spain.

Throughout the tournament, he continued to demonstrate his trademark vision, passing ability and leadership.

One of his standout moments came in Belgium’s 5-1 victory over New Zealand, where he scored a stunning left-footed goal to become the first Belgian footballer to score in three different FIFA World Cup final tournaments.

Napoli Future Remains the Priority

For now, all indications suggest De Bruyne will continue his journey in Italy rather than make the switch to MLS.

While transfer speculation is likely to continue until the window closes, a reunion with Lionel Messi at Inter Miami currently appears unlikely.

Instead, the Belgian star will aim to rediscover his best form under Allegri and play a key role in Napoli’s domestic and European ambitions during the upcoming season.
