India's Jadumani Singh celebrates after winning the silver medal in boxing at the Commonwealth Games 2026, completing an inspiring journey from football enthusiast to international medallist.

India’s Jadumani Singh Mandengbam produced a spirited performance to win the silver medal in the men’s boxing final at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. The Indian boxer went down to Australia’s Jye Dixon by a unanimous decision after a closely contested gold medal bout on Saturday.

Despite missing out on the top podium finish, Jadumani’s silver added another medal to India’s impressive boxing campaign at the Games.

A closely fought final

The championship bout began with Dixon displaying excellent defensive discipline and effective counter-punching, making it difficult for Jadumani to settle into his rhythm.

The Indian boxer, however, responded strongly towards the end of the opening round by landing several clean punches, earning a narrow 3-2 split in that round.

With the contest finely balanced heading into the final round, Jadumani increased the pressure in search of gold. Dixon remained composed, successfully absorbing attacks before replying with accurate counters that ultimately impressed the judges.

Although Jadumani launched an aggressive late attack in the closing seconds, the Australian was awarded victory by unanimous decision.

A football lover before becoming a boxer

Long before stepping into a boxing ring, Jadumani dreamed of becoming a footballer.

Growing up in Iroishemba, Manipur, he spent most of his childhood playing football and quickly became known for his skills on the field. However, his family initially wanted him to focus on academics rather than sports.

Determined to continue playing, Jadumani often slipped out of his house to join local football matches with friends.

His sporting journey took a dramatic turn after his uncle introduced him to boxing—a decision that would eventually redefine his career.

Reflecting on those early days, Jadumani had previously said that although football was his first love, he committed himself completely to boxing once he decided to pursue it professionally.

Overcoming adversity in Manipur

Jadumani’s rise was far from straightforward.

During the period of ethnic unrest in Manipur, his family stood firmly behind him and ensured that his training continued despite the difficult circumstances.

Their support helped him remain focused on his goals while preparing for national and international competitions.

Taking a bold gamble with a higher weight category

One of the biggest turning points in Jadumani’s career came when he decided to move from the 50kg category to 55kg.

The move attracted widespread scepticism, with many believing his relatively shorter height would put him at a disadvantage against naturally bigger opponents.

Instead of backing down, Jadumani trusted his abilities.

His gamble paid off spectacularly as he won the national title in the new weight category, was named the tournament’s Best Boxer, and earned selection for both the Commonwealth Games 2026 and the upcoming Asian Games.

Speaking before the Games, he admitted that the criticism affected him mentally at times but said he never stopped believing in himself.

Olympic dream drives the transition

The decision to compete in a higher weight class was also influenced by his long-term ambition of winning an Olympic medal.

With the 51kg category no longer part of the programme for the Los Angeles Olympics, Jadumani recognised the need to establish himself in a division that would offer future Olympic opportunities.

Before making the transition, he sought guidance from former world champion L. Sarita Devi, who has remained one of his key mentors throughout his career, even after he joined the Army Sports Institute (ASI) in Pune.

A silver medal with a golden story

Although the Commonwealth Games final ended in disappointment, Jadumani Singh’s journey from a football-loving youngster in Manipur to a Commonwealth silver medallist has become one of India’s most inspiring sporting stories.

At just 23 years old, the boxer has already demonstrated resilience, courage, and determination—qualities that could help him chase even bigger dreams on the road to the Asian Games and the Olympics.
