Neeraj Chopra, Rohit Yadav, and Yash Vir Singh have all secured places in the men’s javelin throw final at the Commonwealth Games 2026, giving India three medal contenders in Glasgow.
India enjoyed a perfect outing in the men’s javelin throw qualification at the Commonwealth Games 2026, with all three of its athletes progressing to the final in Glasgow.
Leading the charge was two-time Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra, who safely advanced alongside Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh, ensuring a full Indian presence in Friday’s medal event.
Neeraj Chopra opts for a measured approach
Competing in chilly conditions at Scotstoun Stadium, Neeraj Chopra focused on securing qualification rather than chasing long-distance throws as he continues his return from a long-term back injury.
The 2018 Commonwealth Games champion opened with a throw of 76.28m, placing sixth after the first round. He improved to 79.61m with his second attempt, which moved him into the qualification positions.
Confident of progressing, Chopra chose not to take his final throw, conserving energy for the medal round.
Despite receiving loud support from spectators while wearing a beanie to combat the cold Glasgow weather, the Indian star remained composed and executed his strategy perfectly.
Tough weather affects competition
The qualification round proved challenging for all athletes due to headwinds and temperatures hovering around 18°C.
No competitor managed to achieve the automatic qualifying mark of 84 metres, meaning the top 12 athletes advanced based on their rankings after three rounds.
Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage topped the qualification standings with a best throw of 82.84m, the longest effort of the session.
Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh advance
India’s other two representatives also comfortably booked their places in the final.

Rohit Yadav, whose personal best stands at 87.05m, recorded 77.04m with his opening throw before improving to 78.37m in the second round. Like Chopra, he skipped his final attempt after securing qualification and finished ninth overall.
Meanwhile, Yash Vir Singh showed steady improvement throughout the event.
The 24-year-old opened with 73.89m, followed it with 74.45m, and produced his best effort of 78.36m on the final throw to finish 10th and claim the last Indian qualification spot.
Chopra eyes another Commonwealth title
The Glasgow Games mark Neeraj Chopra’s first Commonwealth Games appearance since winning gold at Gold Coast 2018.
The Olympic champion missed the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games because of injury and only returned to competition earlier this year after recovering from a persistent lower-back problem.
His comeback began at the Doha Diamond League, where he finished fourth with a best throw of 85.69m, showing encouraging signs ahead of the Commonwealth Games.
India targets multiple medals
With three athletes in the final, India will be aiming for a strong medal haul in one of its most successful athletics disciplines.
While Chopra enters the final as one of the favourites for gold, Rohit Yadav and Yash Vir Singh will also look to produce personal best performances and challenge for podium finishes.
The men’s javelin final promises to be one of the highlights of the athletics programme as India chases another memorable chapter in its Commonwealth Games history.
