World Cup Final Referee Retires After Argentina Defeat; What Really Happened Between Slavko Vinčić and Lionel Messi?

The controversy surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup final has refused to die down.

A week after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in extra time to lift the World Cup, Slovenian referee Slavko Vinčić has announced his retirement from professional refereeing at the age of 46.

Vinčić’s decision has immediately attracted attention because his final match came in one of the most intense and debated games of the tournament. The organisation described the end of his career as the conclusion of a historic refereeing journey. By taking charge of the World Cup final, Vinčić became the first Slovenian referee to officiate the biggest match in international football.

His career included more than 500 matches, as well as some of European football’s biggest fixtures.
