Government Issues Fact Check Over Viral Petrol Claims

New Delhi: The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has issued an official clarification after misleading posts on social media sparked confusion over petrol availability and fuel prices across India.

The ministry has categorically stated that claims suggesting only 100% petrol (without ethanol blending) will be available from August 5 are false. It also rejected rumours that E20 petrol would be sold at Rs 105 to Rs 110 per litre, calling the information completely misleading.

What the Viral Post Claimed

A graphic widely circulated on social media alleged that India would stop selling blended petrol from August 5 and shift entirely to 100% petrol.

The same post also claimed that the price of E20 fuel would be increased to between Rs 105 and Rs 110 per litre.

The ministry has clarified that no such decision or announcement has been made by the Government of India.

MoPNG Calls the Claims False

In its official fact-check, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas urged citizens not to believe or circulate unverified information related to fuel policies.

According to the ministry, any official decision regarding petrol availability, ethanol blending or fuel pricing is always communicated through authorised government platforms and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs).

The ministry advised consumers to rely only on official sources instead of social media forwards that can spread misinformation and create unnecessary panic.

E20 Rollout Continues as Planned

The government also reiterated that India’s Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme continues to be implemented as planned.

Under this programme, petrol supplied across the country is gradually blended with ethanol to help:

  • Reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels
  • Improve the country’s energy security
  • Lower vehicle emissions
  • Support farmers through increased ethanol production

The clarification makes it clear that there has been no change in the government’s roadmap for ethanol blending.

Verify Before You Share

The ministry appealed to the public to exercise caution before forwarding fuel-related messages on social media.

Officials warned that false information about petrol prices or government policies can create unnecessary confusion among consumers and lead to the spread of misinformation.

The ministry stressed that all official announcements regarding fuel pricing, ethanol blending and petroleum policies will always be released through authorised government channels and recognised Oil Marketing Companies.

Bottom Line

The viral claims about 100% petrol replacing blended fuel from August 5 and E20 petrol being priced between Rs 105 and Rs 110 per litre are false, according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.

Consumers are advised to ignore such rumours and verify any fuel-related information through official government notifications before believing or sharing it.
