Shahid Kapoor questions CBFC’s ‘A’ rating for Cocktail 2, calling it a film suitable for family viewing.

The release of Cocktail 2 has sparked an unexpected debate even before word-of-mouth could settle in—this time not about its story or performances, but its certification. Actor Shahid Kapoor, who headlines the film alongside Rashmika Mandanna and Kriti Sanon, has openly questioned the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for awarding the film an ‘A’ rating.

Shahid Kapoor’s Reaction: ‘I Don’t Understand Why’

During a social media interaction while promoting the film, Shahid Kapoor addressed fans’ concerns about the certification and reassured them about the film’s content.

“There’s nothing in this film that you would object to… I don’t understand why we received an A-rating,” he said candidly.

Switching to Hindi, Shahid added:
“Iss film ke andar koi bhi aisi cheez nahi hai jisse aap ko aapati ho sakti hai… Mujhe nahi samaj mein aaya.”

He further emphasised that Cocktail 2 is fundamentally a story about relationships and emotions, adding that “it’s a story of three people that can be watched by everyone.”

About the Film

Directed by Homi Adajania, Cocktail 2 is described as a spiritual sequel to the 2012 hit Cocktail. While the original film gained popularity for its modern take on relationships, the new installment explores similar themes with a fresh narrative and cast.

The film stars Rashmika Mandanna and Kriti Sanon alongside Shahid Kapoor, and has been positioned as a light-hearted yet emotional drama revolving around love, friendship, and personal choices.

Why the ‘A’ Certification?

While the CBFC has not publicly detailed the exact reasons behind the ‘A’ rating, such certifications are typically granted based on elements like strong language, mature themes, or suggestive content.

However, Shahid’s remarks suggest that the filmmakers themselves were not expecting such a classification.

The actor’s public confusion has now triggered a broader conversation about how films are rated and whether certification guidelines are being interpreted consistently.

Audience Curiosity Grows

Interestingly, controversies around film certifications often end up generating more curiosity among audiences. With Shahid Kapoor openly backing the film as family-friendly, viewers may now be even more eager to judge for themselves.

Whether Cocktail 2 lives up to its promise of being a wholesome entertainer—or whether the CBFC’s decision holds merit—remains for the audience to decide.
