Madhuri Dixit Reveals She Was Once Body-Shamed for Being ‘Too Skinny’ Long Before Social Media
From early criticism to superstardom, Madhuri Dixit opens up about facing harsh judgments and why self-love matters more than ever today.
Veteran Bollywood icon Madhuri Dixit recently opened up about facing body-shaming early in her career—revealing that she was once criticised for being “too skinny.”
The actress, who is currently earning praise for her performance in Maa Behen, drew parallels between her real-life experiences and the film’s theme of societal judgment.
“Isko Kuch Khilaao…” — A Remark She Never Forgot
Reflecting on her early days in Bollywood, Madhuri shared how people were quick to judge her appearance.
She recalled, “When I had started out, they thought I was too skinny. They would be like, ‘isko kuch khilaao’ (feed her something).”
Highlighting the constant pressure actresses face, she added that people judge women no matter what—whether they gain weight or lose it.
“You’re a public figure… there will always be comments like ‘yeh aisi hai, yeh waisi hai,’” she said, pointing out how criticism comes with being in the spotlight.
Handling Criticism Before the Social Media Era
Madhuri also reflected on how different things were before the rise of social media. Without the constant online chatter, dealing with such remarks was comparatively easier.
However, she acknowledged that today’s generation faces a much harsher environment due to anonymity on digital platforms.

“Today, because of social media… people can say anything. But one should focus on what they love doing,” she advised.
Her message was clear and powerful—self-love and passion should always take priority over public opinion.
A Journey from Rejection to Stardom
Madhuri Dixit began her career with Abodh, but success did not come overnight. Several of her early films failed to leave a mark, and she struggled to fit into the industry’s conventional standards at the time.
Her turning point came with Tezaab, opposite Anil Kapoor. The film was a massive hit, and the song Ek Do Teen transformed her into a household name.

Following this breakthrough, Madhuri delivered a string of hits, including Ram Lakhan, Dil, and Saajan, cementing her place as one of Bollywood’s most celebrated stars.
Back on Screen with ‘Maa Behen’
In her latest release Maa Behen, directed by Suresh Triveni, Madhuri portrays Rekha, a single mother navigating a tense and mysterious situation involving her daughters and a shocking incident at home.
The film also features Triptii Dimri, Dharna Durga, and Ravi Kishan in pivotal roles.
A Timely Reminder in Today’s Digital World
Madhuri Dixit’s candid reflection serves as a reminder that even the biggest stars have faced insecurity and judgment.
Her journey—from being told “isko kuch khilaao” to becoming a timeless icon—proves that talent and resilience matter far more than fleeting opinions.
In an era dominated by filters and online validation, her words resonate deeply: “The idea is to love yourself.”
