Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Dropped After Just 3 Matches… Shreyas Iyer Explains India’s Surprising Selection Call
India recalled Sanju Samson for the fifth T20I against England, with captain Shreyas Iyer saying the team is focusing on finding its best combination for the future despite already losing the series.
The Indian cricket team made one of its most debated selection decisions of the ongoing England tour by dropping teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi from the playing XI for the fifth and final T20I at the Rose Bowl, Southampton.
The 15-year-old batter featured in just three matches before being replaced by Sanju Samson, who returned to the side after missing the previous three games.
The decision came despite India already conceding the five-match series, with England holding an unassailable 3-0 lead before the final encounter.
Shreyas Iyer Explains the Decision
At the toss, India captain Shreyas Iyer clarified that the team management was looking beyond the current series and trying to identify its strongest combination for future assignments.
Confirming the two changes, Iyer said:”We’ve got two changes. Suryansh Shedge comes in for Washington, and Sanju Samson comes in for Sooryavanshi. I feel this is the time we need to figure out what’s best for us going forward as a team. Based on that, we decided this.”
Iyer also stressed that the team wanted to finish the series with maximum commitment despite the result already being decided.
He urged his players to remain focused on the present rather than dwelling on previous defeats.
Sooryavanshi’s Brief Opportunity
Sooryavanshi, who earned widespread praise after his performances in domestic cricket and the IPL, managed scores of 14, 13 and 15 in his three innings against England.
Although he couldn’t convert his starts into significant contributions, many former cricketers believed the youngster deserved a longer run to adjust to international cricket.
Experts Left Surprised
The decision to leave out Sooryavanshi surprised several former players, including Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, and Nasser Hussain, who questioned the move during the pre-match broadcast.
Many expected India to continue backing the teenager, especially with the series already out of reach and the final match offering an opportunity to assess young talent under international conditions.

Selection Debate Continues
India’s selection strategy throughout the tour has drawn criticism.
Initially, Sanju Samson was given opportunities against Ireland and in the opening T20I against England but managed scores of 5, 0 and 1.
The management then turned to Sooryavanshi, who also struggled to make a significant impact before being replaced once again by Samson.
The frequent changes have raised questions over consistency in team selection during a difficult tour.
Eyes on the Zimbabwe Series

Despite being dropped for the final T20I in England, Sooryavanshi remains part of India’s squad for the upcoming Zimbabwe T20I series, beginning on July 23.
Interestingly, Samson has not been named in that squad, making Sooryavanshi one of the young players expected to receive more opportunities in the coming weeks.
With India entering a transitional phase in T20 cricket, the performances of emerging talents like Sooryavanshi will continue to be closely monitored as the team prepares for future ICC tournaments.
