Air India has entered the world's top five airlines for on-time performance, while several Indian airports also earned top global rankings in Cirium's latest aviation report.

In a significant boost for India’s aviation sector, Air India has secured a place among the world’s five most punctual airlines, according to the latest On-Time Performance (OTP) Report released by aviation analytics company Cirium.

The airline ranked fourth globally for its on-time arrival performance in June, marking one of its strongest operational improvements in recent months.

According to the report, Air India achieved an impressive 86.85% on-time arrival rate, a substantial improvement from 73.12% in May and 79.04% in April. The sharp rise reflects the airline’s growing operational consistency as it continues its transformation under the Tata Group.

Only Three Airlines Finished Ahead of Air India

The global rankings placed Saudia at the top with an outstanding 92.38% on-time arrival rate.

Air India also performed well in the Asia-Pacific rankings, securing the fourth position.

Regional budget carrier Jeju Air topped the Asia-Pacific list, followed by Korean Air, Scoot, Air India and Singapore Airlines.

According to Cirium, an airline is considered “on time” if a flight reaches its destination within 15 minutes of its scheduled arrival time. The rankings are based on actual gate arrival data and airlines must satisfy strict data coverage standards to qualify.

Indian Airports Also Shine on the Global Stage

The report wasn’t just good news for Air India. Several Indian airports also delivered exceptional operational performance.

Chennai International Airport secured the fifth position among the world’s large airports with an impressive 92.11% on-time departure rate.

Other Indian airports making the global top 20 include:

Among medium-sized airports, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad secured the third spot globally with a 90.15% on-time departure performance.

Meanwhile, Cochin International Airport ranked 13th among the world’s small airports after recording an 88.11% on-time departure rate.

A Positive Sign for India’s Aviation Industry

Air India’s climb into the global top five comes at a time when India’s aviation industry is witnessing rapid expansion, fleet modernisation and rising passenger demand.

Improved punctuality not only enhances passenger confidence but also strengthens the airline’s reputation in international markets. Combined with the strong performance of multiple Indian airports, the latest rankings underline the country’s growing focus on operational excellence in aviation.

As airlines continue investing in technology, fleet upgrades and customer service, maintaining high on-time performance will remain a key factor in attracting both domestic and international travellers.
