New Delhi: In a significant setback for Bollywood actor Rajpal Yadav, the Delhi High Court on Friday upheld his conviction in multiple cheque bounce cases and sentenced him to three months’ simple imprisonment. The Court dismissed a batch of petitions filed by the actor and others seeking to challenge the trial court’s earlier judgment.

The verdict was delivered by Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma, who heard a series of criminal revision and miscellaneous petitions related to seven cheque bounce complaints filed under the Negotiable Instruments Act by M/s Murli Projects Pvt. Ltd.

Three-Month Jail Term in Seven Cases

The Court sentenced Rajpal Yadav to three months’ simple imprisonment in each of the seven cases. However, all the sentences will run concurrently, meaning the actor will serve the jail term simultaneously rather than consecutively.

In addition to the prison sentence, the Court directed the actor to pay ₹1.05 crore in each case to the complainant.

Wife Also Directed to Pay Compensation

The judgment also includes directions against Radha Rajpal Yadav, the actor’s wife. She has been ordered to pay compensation running into more than ₹5 crore across the cases, as determined by the Court.

The financial directions form part of the Court’s effort to ensure compliance with the liabilities arising from the prolonged legal dispute.

Court Cites Repeated Failure to Honour Commitments

While delivering the judgment, Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma observed that the actor had been given multiple opportunities over the years to resolve the matter amicably.

According to the Court, Rajpal Yadav and his legal representatives repeatedly assured that the settlement would be honoured and the dues would be cleared. However, those assurances were allegedly not fulfilled despite several extensions and opportunities.

The Court noted that repeated undertakings made during the proceedings remained unimplemented, which weighed against the actor while deciding the case.

Two Months to Challenge the Verdict

Although the High Court upheld the conviction, it granted Rajpal Yadav two months to approach a higher court if he chooses to challenge the order.

The latest ruling marks another important chapter in a legal dispute that has continued for over a decade and has remained closely linked to the financing of the actor’s directorial venture, Ata Pata Laapata.

A Long Legal Journey Reaches Another Milestone

The cheque bounce litigation has remained one of the most high-profile financial disputes involving a Bollywood celebrity. With the High Court reaffirming the conviction, the focus now shifts to whether Rajpal Yadav will file an appeal before a higher judicial forum within the time granted.

For now, the verdict reinforces the judiciary’s stand on the importance of honouring financial commitments and complying with court undertakings.
