Ben Stokes returns to action for Durham in County Championship after nightclub incident investigation involving England team

England Test captain Ben Stokes is all set to make his much-anticipated return to competitive cricket, turning out for Durham in the County Championship match against Northamptonshire at Chester-le-Street starting Friday.

The return comes after a brief break from action, during which Stokes, along with fast bowler Gus Atkinson, was left out of England’s ongoing second Test against New Zealand at The Oval. The decision followed an ongoing investigation into a nightclub incident in London involving members of the England camp.

Despite the controversy, both players have now been cleared to participate in domestic cricket while the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the independent Cricket Regulator continue their inquiries.

According to reports, the incident occurred after England’s victory in the first Test at Lord’s, where Stokes and Atkinson were found to have breached the team’s midnight curfew during post-match celebrations. The situation escalated after a member of the team’s security staff was reportedly involved in an altercation at the venue.

While speculation briefly circulated about Stokes’ future in international cricket, those concerns have eased after the 35-year-old resumed training with Durham earlier this week. His inclusion in the 15-member squad now marks his third appearance in the county season.

Meanwhile, in Stokes’ absence from the national setup, Joe Root has stepped in as England’s Test captain on a match-by-match basis, guiding the side through a crucial phase of the series.

Attention now turns to the third Test against New Zealand, scheduled to begin at Trent Bridge next Thursday, where England will hope for clarity on player availability as investigations continue.

For now, Stokes’ return to Durham offers him a chance to regain rhythm on the field while the off-field scrutiny continues behind the scenes.
