Team India captain Shubman Gill is on the cusp of creating another milestone in his flourishing Test career as India prepare to face Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series beginning on August 15 in Galle.

Fresh from an outstanding run in the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle, Gill requires just 50 more runs to become only the fourth Indian batter to score 1,000 runs in a single WTC cycle.

The stylish right-hander has been in exceptional form since taking over the Test captaincy from Rohit Sharma, emerging as one of the world’s most consistent batters in red-ball cricket.

Gill Chasing an Exclusive Indian Record

Gill currently has 950 runs in just eight Test matches in the ongoing WTC cycle at a remarkable average of 79.16.

His tally includes five centuries, one half-century, and a career-best score of 269, making him the third-highest run-scorer in the current championship.

Only Joe Root (1,108 runs) and Harry Brook (1,056 runs) have scored more runs than Gill in the ongoing WTC standings.

If he reaches the 1,000-run mark in the opening Test against Sri Lanka, Gill will join an elite Indian list featuring:

• Yashasvi Jaiswal – 1,798 runs (WTC 2023-25)
• Ajinkya Rahane – 1,159 runs (WTC 2019-21)
• Rohit Sharma – 1,094 runs (WTC 2019-21)

Notably, no Indian batter managed to cross the 1,000-run mark during the 2021-23 World Test Championship cycle.

Apart from the WTC milestone, Gill is also closing in on another significant personal achievement.

The Indian skipper needs only 31 more runs to complete 3,000 Test runs, a feat he is expected to achieve during the Sri Lanka series.

So far, Gill has amassed 2,969 runs in 41 Test matches at an impressive average of 44.31, including 11 centuries and eight fifties.

With his confidence soaring after a prolific run in England and his growing stature as captain, Gill will be eager to continue his rich vein of form on Sri Lankan soil.
