The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI)‘s Centre of Excellence (CoE) has reportedly come under scrutiny following Jasprit Bumrah’s latest injury setback, with the Ajit Agarkar-led senior selection committee said to be unhappy over the handling of the star pacer’s fitness updates.

Bumrah was officially ruled out of India’s upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka due to a knee injury, forcing the selectors to name Jammu & Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi as his replacement.

The development has reportedly raised concerns over communication and injury management between the CoE’s medical staff and the national selectors.

Selection Committee Reportedly Caught Off Guard

According to reports, the selection committee had initially been informed that Bumrah was likely to regain fitness in time for the Sri Lanka tour.

However, subsequent medical assessments reportedly revealed that the pacer’s knee issue was more serious than first anticipated, ultimately ruling him out of the series beginning on August 15.

The sudden change in Bumrah’s availability is understood to have frustrated the selectors, who were preparing the squad with the expectation that India’s premier fast bowler would be fit.

Agarkar Holds Meeting With CoE Officials

Following Bumrah’s withdrawal, chief selector Ajit Agarkar reportedly met senior officials at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, including its head VVS Laxman, to discuss concerns surrounding the injury management of centrally contracted cricketers.

The reported meeting focused on improving coordination between the medical team and the selection committee while reviewing current rehabilitation and fitness assessment processes.

Although neither the BCCI nor the CoE has issued any official statement regarding the discussions, the reported meeting highlights the importance being placed on player workload and medical communication.

Sports Science Department Under Spotlight

The issue has also drawn attention to the current structure of the CoE’s sports science department.

The facility has been operating without a permanent Head of Sports Science since the departure of Nitin Patel. At present, Dhananjay Kaushik is serving as the interim head of the department.

Despite the Centre of Excellence boasting world-class infrastructure and rehabilitation facilities, recent injury cases have prompted questions about its operational processes.

Not Just Bumrah

Bumrah’s case is not the only one to have sparked discussion in recent months.

The injury management of players such as Harshit Rana, Nitish Reddy, and Washington Sundar has also attracted attention, with concerns being raised over rehabilitation timelines and player availability.

With India entering a crucial phase of the World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, ensuring the fitness of key players remains a top priority for the team management and selectors.

Bumrah’s absence is undoubtedly a major setback for India ahead of the Sri Lanka series, while the reported concerns surrounding the CoE are expected to keep player injury management under close observation in the coming months.
