Ameesha Patel Makes Bold ‘Gadar vs Dhurandhar’ Claim: ‘More People Watched Tara Singh’s Story Than…’
As Gadar: Ek Prem Katha completes 25 years, Ameesha Patel reflects on its historic success and claims the Gadar franchise attracted more cinema-goers than Ranveer Singh’s blockbuster Dhurandhar films.
Mumbai: As Gadar: Ek Prem Katha approaches its landmark 25th anniversary, actress Ameesha Patel is celebrating not just the legacy of the film but also its enduring connection with audiences across generations.
In a recent interaction, the actress made a striking comparison between the Gadar franchise and the hugely successful Dhurandhar series, claiming that the combined footfalls of Gadar and Gadar 2 remain higher than those recorded by Dhurandhar and its sequel.
According to Ameesha, the true measure of a film’s impact goes beyond box-office collections and lies in the number of people who actually walked into theatres to experience the story.
‘Gadar Still Holds A Special Place’
Reflecting on the journey of the franchise, Ameesha expressed pride in being part of a cinematic phenomenon that continues to resonate with audiences even after two and a half decades.
She noted that the original film and its sequel together attracted massive crowds, turning the franchise into one of the most celebrated success stories in Indian cinema. The actress described the achievement as both humbling and emotional, saying it feels special to remain connected with a story that has stood the test of time.
A Film That Created History From Day One
Looking back at the release of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha in 2001, Ameesha recalled the extraordinary response it received from audiences across the country.
The film opened to packed theatres and quickly transformed into a nationwide phenomenon, particularly in single-screen cinemas where audiences embraced the emotional drama and patriotic narrative with unmatched enthusiasm.
At the time, Ameesha was juggling multiple film projects and says she barely had a chance to absorb the scale of the success unfolding around her. Only later did she realise that Gadar had become one of the defining films of its era.

Why Gadar Became A Cultural Landmark
Directed by Anil Sharma, the film was set against the backdrop of the Partition of India in 1947. It told the story of Tara Singh, a Sikh truck driver played by Sunny Deol, and Sakina, portrayed by Ameesha Patel, whose love story unfolds amid violence, separation and political turmoil.
The emotional narrative, powerful performances and memorable dialogues helped the film achieve cult status.

More than two decades later, Gadar 2 reignited the magic, bringing Tara Singh back to the big screen as he crossed the border once again—this time to rescue his son.
A Legacy That Refuses To Fade
While newer franchises continue to dominate headlines and break records, the Gadar series remains a benchmark for audience engagement and emotional storytelling.
As the film completes 25 years, Ameesha Patel’s remarks have once again sparked conversations about cinema’s biggest crowd-pullers and the enduring popularity of characters like Tara Singh and Sakina.
Whether measured through collections, cultural influence or sheer audience turnout, Gadar continues to hold a special place in Bollywood history.
