Amaal Mallik Steps Away From Film Music: ‘Ab Mujhe Vida Karo, I’ll Be Back…’
After composing Yeh Awarapan for Emraan Hashmi’s Awarapan 2, the singer-composer has announced a break from Bollywood projects until next year to focus on his health and healing.
Amaal Mallik has surprised his fans by announcing that he will not compose new music for films until next year. In an emotional message shared on X, the singer-composer said he needs time to recover physically and mentally before returning with fresh melodies.
The announcement comes shortly after the release of Yeh Awarapan, the prominent track composed by Amaal for Awarapan 2. The film stars Emraan Hashmi, Disha Patani and Shabana Azmi.
While announcing his break, Amaal reassured his followers popularly known as Amaalians that he was doing well. However, he admitted that he needed time away to prioritise his mind, body and overall health.
“Need a break for my mind, body, soul and overall physical healing,” he wrote, adding that he hopes to recuperate and return with a heart full of music. (Amaal Mallik’s statement on X)
No new film music until next year
Amaal clarified that he will not accept new film-music assignments until next year. However, some songs that he has already composed for unreleased projects may still arrive if those films eventually make it to cinemas.
The composer explained that several of these tracks belong to smaller-budget movies made with good intentions. Since independent and modestly budgeted films often struggle to secure sufficient screens, he remains uncertain about when or whether those songs will be released.
He also requested fans not to repeatedly question him about the pending projects, assuring them that he would share updates whenever he received confirmed information.
Reflecting on his journey, Amaal said that cinema had taken him a long way, but he now felt drawn back towards music on his own terms. He ended his message with the emotional line: “Ab mujhe vida karo, I’ll be back.”
Is Amaal Mallik leaving music completely?
Despite the emotional tone of his announcement, Amaal is not retiring from music. His statement specifically refers to a temporary break from composing for films.

The musician appears keen to reconnect with independent music and focus on projects that are personally meaningful. His message suggests that the break is less about abandoning his career and more about reclaiming creative space away from the pressures of Bollywood.
For fans, that distinction matters. Amaal may be stepping away from movie soundtracks temporarily, but he has indicated that he intends to return after recovering.
Earlier accused powerful figures of sidelining him
Amaal’s latest decision comes months after he made serious allegations about the workings of the Hindi film and music industries
In May, the composer claimed that unnamed influential people had removed him from more than 60 film projects over several years. He alleged that industry politics, professional disagreements and his refusal to remain silent about unfair practices affected the opportunities coming his way.
Amaal also said that he had rejected around 20 other films himself because he was uncomfortable with their working environments. He maintained that he was willing to continue producing independent music even if Bollywood projects stopped arriving. These claims were made by Amaal and were not independently verified. A career filled with memorable Bollywood songs
The son of composer Daboo Malik and nephew of Anu Malik, Amaal made his Bollywood debut as a composer with Salman Khan’s Jai Ho in 2014.
His major breakthrough arrived with Sooraj Dooba Hai from the 2015 film Roy. The track became a chartbuster and established him as one of the most promising composers of his generation.
He subsequently worked on films including Hero, Airlift, Kapoor & Sons, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, Kabir Singh and Vedaa. In addition to composing, Amaal has sung several tracks and previously released independent singles.
His latest announcement marks a significant pause in a film-music journey spanning more than a decade. For now, Amaal’s message to his listeners is clear: he needs time, space and healing and he wants his fans to wait for his return without placing additional pressure on him.
