Supreme Court Declines Petition Over Delhi Protest Allegations

New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday refused to entertain a letter petition that sought judicial intervention over the alleged use of force by Delhi Police during a student-led protest organised by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in the national capital.

The petition was mentioned before a bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, where Advocate Narendra Mishra urged the court to take suo motu cognisance of the alleged incidents, including reports of lathi charge, tear gas shelling, and excessive police action against protesters.

However, the court declined to hear the matter. During the brief exchange, the Chief Justice made a sharp oral observation, stating, “Don’t waste our time and don’t waste yours. We are not interested in videos. We don’t have time to watch.”

The remark effectively ended the request for immediate judicial intervention.

Petition Demanded Judicial Inquiry and Compensation

The letter petition sought a comprehensive judicial inquiry into the alleged violence that occurred during the student demonstrations.

Apart from requesting the court to take suo motu cognisance, the plea demanded the registration of FIRs against officials found responsible for any unlawful use of force. It also called for the preservation of electronic evidence, including videos allegedly documenting the clashes.

The petitioner further expressed concern over reports claiming that some individuals in civilian clothing were involved in the violence. An independent investigation into their alleged role was also sought.

Additionally, the plea requested financial compensation for protesters who reportedly sustained injuries during the demonstrations.

Student Protest Continues at Jantar Mantar

Despite the legal setback, the CJP-led protest continues at Jantar Mantar, where students and youth organisations have been gathering to press for sweeping reforms in India’s education system.

The movement has gained momentum over concerns surrounding alleged irregularities in examinations such as NEET-UG, dissatisfaction with CBSE evaluation practices, and broader demands for transparency in educational institutions.

Among the key demands raised by protesters are the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, compensation for affected students and families, and structural reforms aimed at improving examination processes.

Sonam Wangchuk’s Hunger Strike Drew National Attention

One of the most significant moments in the ongoing movement came when activist Sonam Wangchuk joined the protest in late June.

Wangchuk began an indefinite hunger strike around June 28, drawing nationwide attention to the student movement. As the fast entered its third week, concerns regarding his deteriorating health intensified.

Medical reports later indicated health complications, including pancytopenia and low potassium levels, prompting authorities to intervene.

Hospital Transfer After Health Concerns

Around July 18, Delhi Police shifted Wangchuk from the protest site to Safdarjung Hospital, citing medical advice and directions issued by the Delhi High Court to safeguard his health.

The transfer reportedly took place during the early morning hours and witnessed resistance from supporters gathered at the site.

Subsequently, Wangchuk’s wife approached the High Court, seeking his transfer to a medical facility of his choice. The court later permitted his transfer to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram, where he continues to remain under medical observation while maintaining his protest.

Demonstrations Continue Despite Heavy Security

The movement has witnessed large gatherings in recent weeks, with thousands of supporters marching towards Parliament under heavy security arrangements.

Several reports suggested clashes between protesters and police, during which lathi charges and tear gas were allegedly used. Injuries were reported among both demonstrators and security personnel.

Political leaders from the Opposition later visited the protest site, while representatives of the Cockroach Janta Party also held discussions with Union Minister J.P. Nadda, submitting a list of demands related to education reforms.

Although tensions have eased in recent days, supporters continue their peaceful demonstrations at Jantar Mantar, keeping the issue alive through public campaigns and social media.

The Supreme Court’s refusal to entertain the petition marks an important legal development, but the broader debate surrounding education reforms, student rights, and policing during public protests remains far from over.
