Meta has introduced WhatsApp Plus in India, offering premium customization features such as themes, app icons, stickers, and expanded chat controls for ₹79 per month.

New Delhi: For more than a decade, WhatsApp has remained one of the world’s most popular free messaging platforms. Now, parent company Meta Platforms is introducing a new optional subscription tier in India called WhatsApp Plus, giving users access to additional personalization features for ₹79 per month.

The move marks a significant shift for the messaging giant, although the company has made it clear that core services such as messaging, voice calls, video calls, and end-to-end encryption will continue to remain free for everyone. Reports indicate that the subscription is focused primarily on customization and enhanced chat management rather than essential communication features.

What Does WhatsApp Plus Offer?

The new premium plan is designed for users who enjoy customizing their app experience.

Subscribers can access a range of exclusive features, including:

  • New color themes and interface customization options
  • Alternative WhatsApp app icons
  • Exclusive ringtone and notification sound packs
  • Premium sticker collections
  • Expanded chat organization tools
  • Ability to pin up to 20 chats simultaneously instead of the standard limit
  • Additional customization controls for chat lists and notifications

Meta has described the subscription as an optional upgrade aimed at users who want greater personalization and organization features within the app.

A One-Month Free Trial for New Users

To encourage adoption, eligible users are reportedly being offered a free trial period before the ₹79 monthly charge begins.

The subscription is currently rolling out gradually across India, meaning some users may already see the option under the “Subscriptions” section of the app settings, while others may have to wait for wider availability.

Do Regular Users Need It?

For many people, the answer may be no.

WhatsApp Plus does not unlock any major communication tools that are unavailable to free users. Sending messages, sharing media, making calls, and maintaining privacy protections remain unchanged.

Instead, the subscription appears to target power users who enjoy personalizing their digital experience and keeping large numbers of conversations organized. Industry observers have noted that the offering is largely cosmetic, focusing more on appearance and convenience than on introducing groundbreaking new functionality.

Meta’s New Subscription Strategy

The launch also reflects Meta’s broader effort to diversify revenue streams across its family of apps. Similar premium offerings have already appeared on platforms such as Instagram, and WhatsApp Plus could be the beginning of a wider push toward optional subscription-based features.

For now, however, users can continue using WhatsApp exactly as before without paying a single rupee.

The real question is whether Indian users will embrace premium themes, stickers, and customization tools—or simply stick with the free version that has become an everyday essential for billions of people worldwide.
