Huge Opportunity or Tokenism? Sunidhi Chauhan Reacts as Grammys Introduce Best Asian Pop Category, Debate Heats Up
New Grammy category sparks global conversation; Sunidhi Chauhan calls it a “fantastic step” while critics question intent behind segregation
The global music industry is witnessing a major shift as the Recording Academy announced the introduction of five new categories for the 2027 Grammy Awards — most notably the Best Asian Pop Music Performance. While the move aims to acknowledge the growing dominance of Asian music worldwide, it has triggered a sharp divide between celebration and criticism.
Renowned Indian playback singer Sunidhi Chauhan has welcomed the development, calling it a long-overdue recognition of Asian talent on the global stage. “Global recognition for Asian artistes is fantastic and a huge opportunity for musicians,” she said, reflecting optimism about the future of Indian and Asian music internationally.
She further emphasized that Indian music has already carved a strong global presence. “If we win, we win; if we don’t, it doesn’t change anything for Indian music, which is already global,” she added, underlining confidence in the industry’s growth beyond awards.
The BTS Factor and Timing Buzz
The timing of this announcement has further intensified discussions, especially with global K-pop sensation BTS reuniting after completing their mandatory military service. The group has previously secured multiple Grammy nominations, including three consecutive nods in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category between 2021 and 2023, but has yet to secure a win.
Fans across the globe are speculating whether the introduction of a dedicated Asian category could improve BTS’ chances of finally clinching a Grammy. However, there is no official indication that the category was designed with any specific artist in mind.

Why the Controversy?
Despite the excitement, the new category has drawn criticism online. Many critics argue that categorising Asian music separately could limit broader recognition in mainstream categories, rather than integrating it into the global music ecosystem.
The Recording Academy clarified that the award will recognise music originating from or widely popular within Asian markets, including — but not limited to — K-pop, J-pop, and C-pop. However, detractors believe that Asia’s vast and diverse musical landscape cannot be confined to a single category.

Some have labelled the move as “tokenism”, questioning whether it creates inclusivity or unintentionally reinforces division. Others argue that it might reduce the incentive for Asian artists to compete in top global categories.
Other Key Grammy Changes
Apart from the new Asian pop category, the Academy also introduced several notable updates:
- Artists can now submit entries up to four times instead of three for the Best New Artist category
- Digital-only albums are now eligible for Best Album Notes and Best Historical Album
These changes reflect the evolving nature of the music industry, particularly with the rise of digital platforms and global streaming audiences.
A Turning Point for Asian Music?
The introduction of the Best Asian Pop Music Performance category marks a significant moment in the Grammys’ history. While the intent is to spotlight Asian talent, the debate highlights a larger question — whether global recognition should come through dedicated spaces or equal competition on the main stage.
As Sunidhi Chauhan aptly put it, _“Whenever the Grammy win has to happen, it will happen.” For now, the world watches as Asian music continues its unstoppable rise, with or without a separate category.
