‘A Good Film Doesn’t Need Money, It needs intention’: Sarggun Mehta opens up about taking risks and reinventing her career

The actor, who successfully transitioned from television to Punjabi cinema and later became a producer, says her career has always been guided by instinct, reinvention, and the courage to embrace new opportunities.

Remembering Television’s Golden Era

Looking back at her early years in the entertainment industry, Sarggun recalled a time when Indian television was witnessing unprecedented popularity.

According to the actor, television actors were earning impressive fees as audiences remained deeply invested in daily soaps and reality shows.

She particularly remembered participating in Nach Baliye, describing the period as one in which the show dominated viewers’ attention.

The booming television industry, she said, created exciting opportunities for performers before she eventually shifted her focus to films.

The Decision That Changed Everything

Sarggun revealed that her journey into film production began unexpectedly while discussing the Punjabi film Kala Shah Kala (2019).

The makers informed her that they could not afford her acting fee.

Instead of declining the project, Sarggun asked to hear the script first.

After listening to the story, she proposed an alternative arrangement that would eventually reshape her career.

Rather than accepting an acting fee, she requested a share of the film’s profits and asked to be credited as a producer.

The unconventional decision proved to be a turning point and eventually led to the establishment of her own production company.

Building a Production House

Following the success of that experience, Sarggun and her husband, Ravie Dubey, expanded their creative ambitions by launching their own production ventures.

The couple later produced the popular television drama Udaariyaan, which premiered in 2021 and became a successful addition to Indian television.

Today, Sarggun continues to balance acting with producing films and television content.

‘Intention Matters More Than Budget’

Sharing her philosophy on filmmaking, Sarggun dismissed the notion that large budgets alone determine a film’s success.

According to her, determination and creative intent are far more important than financial resources.

She believes a filmmaker with a genuine vision can create a meaningful and beautiful film even with a modest budget.

Sarggun also acknowledged that while some projects are made for commercial success, others are driven purely by personal passion and artistic satisfaction.

For now, she says she is content producing television shows and films while continuing to pursue acting alongside her production career.
