Samsung says pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series have risen 30% compared to last year, signalling growing interest in foldable smartphones.

Samsung Electronics has announced a strong start for its latest generation of foldable smartphones, revealing that pre-orders for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Galaxy Z Flip 8 have surpassed expectations.

According to the company, the new foldable lineup is on track to become the best-performing Galaxy Z series in terms of pre-orders, with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 family recording a 30% increase compared to last year’s launch.

The announcement comes just ahead of the devices’ official retail availability on August 7.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 Emerges as the Surprise Favourite

Samsung says the redesigned Galaxy Z Fold 8, featuring a wider, passport-style form factor, has been particularly well received by consumers.

The company revealed that the Fold 8 alone accounts for nearly half of all Galaxy Z series pre-orders, indicating strong customer interest in its refreshed design and larger inner display.

Speaking about the encouraging response, Drew Blackard, Senior Vice President of Mobile Product Management at Samsung Electronics America, said the company is pleased with the early momentum generated by the new devices.

He noted that the redesigned form factor is helping expand the foldable smartphone category and attracting more users than previous generations.

Competition Is About to Heat Up

Samsung’s positive announcement comes at a crucial time, as competition in the premium foldable smartphone market is expected to intensify over the coming weeks.

Apple is widely expected to unveil its first foldable iPhone in September, marking the company’s long-awaited entry into the foldable segment.

Reports suggest Apple’s device could adopt a design similar to Samsung’s wider Galaxy Z Fold 8, setting the stage for direct competition between the two technology giants.

Meanwhile, Google is preparing to launch the Pixel 11 Pro Fold on August 12. Unlike Samsung’s wider Fold 8, Google’s upcoming foldable is expected to feature a taller and narrower design similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

Foldables Still Represent a Small Market

Despite growing consumer interest, foldable smartphones continue to account for only a small portion of the overall smartphone market.

Traditional flagship devices such as the Galaxy S26 Ultra and iPhone 17 Pro Max remain significantly more popular due to their lower prices and familiar designs.

However, industry analysts believe Apple’s entry into the foldable category could significantly accelerate adoption by introducing the technology to millions of existing iPhone users.

Samsung Continues to Lead the Foldable Segment

Samsung has maintained a dominant position in the foldable smartphone market, particularly in the United States, where it has consistently outperformed competitors such as Google and Motorola, owned by Lenovo Group.

The company also revealed an interesting shift in consumer behaviour.

According to Samsung, more than three times as many existing Galaxy Z Flip users have upgraded to the Galaxy Z Fold 8 or Fold 8 Ultra compared to previous product generations, suggesting that customers are increasingly favouring book-style foldable smartphones over flip-style designs.

A Crucial Year for Foldable Smartphones

With record-breaking early demand and strong consumer interest, Samsung appears to have strengthened its leadership in the foldable smartphone market.

However, the months ahead could prove pivotal as Apple prepares to enter the segment for the first time and Google continues expanding its Pixel Fold lineup.

Whether Samsung can maintain its dominance will likely depend not only on innovative hardware but also on pricing, software experience, and how consumers respond to an increasingly competitive foldable ecosystem.
