Abuse by Strangers, Reputation at Risk, Filmmaker Pushpendra Singh Speaks Out After Mistaken Identity Sparks Online Trolling

A case of mistaken identity on social media has turned into a distressing ordeal for filmmaker Pushpendra Singh, who recently found himself at the receiving end of online abuse — all due to a viral video involving another individual with the same name.

The controversy began when actor Satendra Soni, known for his role in Laapataa Ladies directed by Kiran Rao, posted a video on Instagram seeking public help regarding a financial dispute with a filmmaker named Pushpendra Singh.

However, as the video gained traction, it triggered confusion online. Many users mistakenly identified and targeted the wrong Pushpendra Singh — an independent filmmaker who had no connection to the dispute.

‘People Started Targeting Me’

Speaking about the incident, Pushpendra revealed how quickly things spiraled out of control.

“Once the video went viral, I noticed I was tagged in posts where people were asking others to target me,” he said. He immediately tried to clarify the situation and urged people to act responsibly before directing anger toward anyone.

Although Satendra later shared contact details of the filmmaker actually involved — temporarily easing the situation — the relief did not last long.

“The next day, the other Pushpendra deactivated his account, and people started trolling and abusing me again… to a point where things went beyond my control,” he added.

A Familiar Yet Escalated Problem

The filmmaker clarified that he has never met Satendra Soni or his namesake. He also pointed out that this wasn’t the first time he had faced such confusion.

He mentioned being previously mistaken for the director of Ajmer 92, a film released a couple of years ago. However, this time, the situation escalated significantly due to the scale of social media amplification.

“People see a name in a viral video, search the first result, and start attacking… nobody pauses to ask if it’s the right person,” he said, highlighting the dangers of impulsive online behavior.

Beyond the emotional toll, Pushpendra expressed concern about the professional consequences of the incident.

“What bothers me is the abuse by strangers and my reputation in the industry going for a toss,” he said, adding that the situation came at a crucial time when he was preparing to work on his next independent film.

The filmmaker emphasized that misinformation and assumptions can have serious real-world consequences, especially in an industry where reputation plays a critical role.
