Priyanka Gandhi Breaks Silence on India Hockey Jersey Row, Says ‘No Matter What They Change…’ as Orange Kit Sparks Nationwide Debate

The controversy surrounding the Indian men’s and women’s hockey team’s new World Cup jersey has taken a political turn after Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reacted to the growing debate over Hockey India’s decision to introduce a predominantly orange jersey for the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup.

Speaking on Thursday, Priyanka Gandhi said that changing symbols, uniforms or historical narratives cannot alter the values that define the nation. Her remarks came after former India hockey captain Viren Rasquinha publicly criticised the decision to move away from the team’s traditional blue jersey, a colour long associated with Indian hockey’s identity.

Addressing reporters, Priyanka Gandhi said that regardless of what changes are introduced, the younger generation has already expressed what it stands for.”Whether they change the uniform or try to rewrite history, the youth of this country have made their views clear. Their voice reflects the spirit of the nation,” she said.

The Congress leader further stressed that India’s freedom movement was built on the ideals of truth, non-violence and unity, adding that these principles remain deeply rooted in the country’s identity despite political disagreements.

According to Priyanka Gandhi, the nation’s core values cannot be erased through changes in symbols or narratives. She said that while political debates may continue, India’s foundation of brotherhood and harmony will always remain intact.

Viren Rasquinha Questions Hockey India’s Decision

The controversy began after Hockey India unveiled a new orange jersey for both the men’s and women’s national teams for the upcoming 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup, replacing the iconic blue kit that has represented Indian hockey for decades.

Former captain Viren Rasquinha, who led India internationally and represented the country at the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2006 Men’s Hockey World Cup, expressed disappointment over the decision.

In a post on social media platform X, Rasquinha acknowledged Hockey India’s efforts in developing the sport but called the jersey change difficult to understand.

He said the blue jersey has always symbolised Indian hockey and remains an emotional part of the team’s legacy. According to him, fans across generations instantly identify Indian hockey with blue, making the sudden switch to orange confusing.

Rasquinha questioned the logic behind replacing a colour that has become synonymous with the national team’s identity.

Why Hockey India Introduced the Orange Jersey

Defending the design, Hockey India explained that the new jersey draws inspiration from India’s cultural heritage and the national flag.

The federation said the saffron shade represents courage, sacrifice and victory, while the design also incorporates several symbolic elements reflecting India’s traditions.

Among the key features are:

• Mandala-inspired artwork celebrating Indian culture.
• Navy blue detailing inspired by the Ashoka Chakra.
• A modern interpretation of the Sudarshan Chakra, representing strength and unity.
• Tricolour accents along the shoulders and sides.
• “India” written in stylised Devanagari script.
• Recognition of Odisha’s continued support for Indian hockey.

According to Hockey India, the jersey has been designed around the vision of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat”, combining modern aesthetics with national symbolism.

What began as a discussion about a sports uniform has now evolved into a wider national conversation involving identity, tradition and symbolism.
