Sony Pictures has finally released the first official trailer for Jumanji: Open World, giving fans their first look at the highly anticipated final installment of the modern Jumanji franchise. The biggest surprise? This time, the game’s iconic avatars aren’t trapped inside Jumanji—they’ve escaped into the real world.

The upcoming action-comedy reunites franchise favourites Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan for one last adventure, while introducing a fresh twist that turns the series’ familiar formula upside down.

The game comes to the real world

Unlike the previous two films, where teenagers were pulled into the magical video game and transformed into heroic avatars, Jumanji: Open World reverses the concept entirely.

The trailer reveals that Dr. Smolder Bravestone, Franklin “Mouse” Finbar, Professor Shelly Oberon, and Ruby Roundhouse have crossed over into reality after escaping the game. However, the avatars are stuck in what the film calls “demo mode,” leaving them confused about how the real world works while chaos unfolds around them.

The result is a fresh blend of action, comedy and fish-out-of-water humour that has become a trademark of the reboot series.

Original reboot cast returns

The trailer confirms the return of the franchise’s biggest stars.

Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as Dr. Smolder Bravestone, while Kevin Hart returns as Franklin “Mouse” Finbar. Jack Black is back as Professor Shelly Oberon, and Karen Gillan once again plays Ruby Roundhouse.

Several familiar faces also return, including Nick Jonas, Danny DeVito, Rhys Darby, Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, and Ser’Darius Blain. The film also introduces new cast members, expanding the world as the franchise heads toward its conclusion.

Jake Kasdan returns for the finale

Director Jake Kasdan, who helmed both Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level, returns to direct the third chapter of the reboot trilogy.

Kasdan also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg, while longtime producers Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Matt Tolmach, and Kasdan are back to oversee the project.

A franchise worth over $1.7 billion

The modern Jumanji series has been one of Sony’s biggest box office success stories.

Released in 2017, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle surprised the industry by earning more than $950 million worldwide. Its sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level (2019), added over $800 million, taking the reboot franchise’s global earnings beyond $1.7 billion.

The films successfully reinvented the classic adventure first introduced in Chris Van Allsburg’s children’s book and the beloved 1995 film starring the late Robin Williams, transforming the magical board game into a dangerous video game adventure.

Christmas 2026 release locked in

Sony has shifted Jumanji: Open World to a December 25, 2026 theatrical release, positioning it as one of the studio’s biggest holiday releases. The film will arrive during a crowded festive season, but Sony is banking on the franchise’s popularity and returning ensemble cast to attract audiences worldwide.

With the first trailer now out, anticipation is building for what promises to be the most ambitious and emotional adventure in the reboot trilogy.
