Ibrahim Zadran Creates History, Joins Shubman Gill and Hashim Amla in Elite ODI Record…
Afghanistan opener Ibrahim Zadran has become the joint-third-fastest batter in ODI history to reach 2,000 runs, achieving the landmark in just 45 innings during the fourth ODI against Ireland.
Ibrahim Zadran has added another major achievement to his rapidly growing international career.
The Afghanistan opener reached the landmark of 2,000 ODI runs in just 45 innings during the fourth ODI against Ireland at the Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast on Wednesday.
By reaching the milestone in his 45th innings, Zadran moved into an elite group of batters who have reached 2,000 ODI runs at remarkable speed. He is now the joint-third-fastest batter in ODI history, according to ESPNcricinfo statistics.
The achievement puts Zadran alongside some of the biggest names in modern ODI cricket.
Zadran Joins Elite Company
Only two batters have reached 2,000 ODI runs faster than Zadran.
India’s Shubman Gill leads the list, having achieved the milestone in just 38 innings, while former South Africa opener Hashim Amla took 40 innings.
Zadran, meanwhile, reached the mark in 45 innings, the same number required by Zaheer Abbas, Kevin Pietersen, Babar Azam and Rassie van der Dussen.
That makes the achievement particularly significant for Afghanistan cricket, which continues to produce players capable of competing with the world’s established cricketing powers.

A Milestone During Another Brilliant Knock
Zadran did not merely reach the landmark and disappear from the game.
The right-handed batter continued his impressive innings against Ireland, eventually scoring a century.
According to reports, he made 107 runs from 118 deliveries, including 11 fours and a six. The innings was his seventh ODI century, taking him to second place among Afghanistan’s century-makers in the format, behind Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who has nine.
His latest performance also underlined why he has become one of Afghanistan’s most dependable ODI batters.
Zadran now has 2,105 ODI runs from 45 innings, with seven centuries and 10 fifties. His career average is also above 50, a remarkable figure for a batter still establishing himself at international level.
Afghanistan’s Fastest to 2,000 ODI Runs
The achievement also makes Zadran the fastest Afghan batter to reach 2,000 ODI runs in terms of innings.
He has gone past Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who needed 54 innings to reach the same landmark. Zadran is also only the eighth Afghan batter to cross 2,000 runs in the format.
The numbers highlight just how quickly Zadran has established himself at the top of Afghanistan’s batting order.
His consistency has become one of the key reasons behind Afghanistan’s progress in ODI cricket, particularly as the team looks towards the 2027 ODI World Cup.
A Strong Record Away From Home
One of the most impressive aspects of Zadran’s record is that his performances have not been limited to home conditions.
He has already accumulated more than 1,000 runs in neutral-venue ODIs, averaging around 49 in those matches. In away games, he has also maintained an average above 50, with four centuries and four fifties to his name.
That ability to score runs away from home adds weight to his growing reputation.
For Afghanistan, having a top-order batter capable of performing consistently in different conditions is a major advantage as the team continues to play more bilateral series against established cricket nations.

Afghanistan’s ODI Rise Continues
Zadran’s milestone comes during an important period for Afghanistan cricket.
The team has increasingly become a serious force in international white-ball cricket, with players such as Rashid Khan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Mohammad Nabi and Zadran playing key roles in its rise.
The current ODI series against Ireland has already produced another important moment for Afghanistan, with the team securing its place in the 2027 ODI World Cup qualification picture after taking an unassailable lead in the series.
Zadran’s form could be crucial as Afghanistan builds towards the tournament.
Can Zadran Challenge the Modern Greats?
Reaching 2,000 ODI runs in 45 innings does not guarantee a batter will go on to become one of the format’s all-time greats.
However, the company Zadran has now joined is impossible to ignore.
With Gill, Amla, Babar, Pietersen and Zaheer Abbas among the names associated with the record, Zadran’s achievement provides another indication of his enormous potential.
At only 24, he still has many years ahead of him to build on this foundation.
For Afghanistan, the hope will be that this is only the beginning.
For Zadran, meanwhile, the next target is no longer simply reaching milestones. It is establishing himself as one of the world’s leading ODI batters.
