India’s Bangladesh Tour Back on Track? BCCI Awaits Government Clearance for September White-Ball Series

After months of uncertainty, Team India could be set to return to Bangladesh for a white-ball series in September, provided the proposed tour receives clearance from the Government of India.

According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have been holding discussions to finalise an itinerary for the tour, even as they await the government’s approval before making an official announcement.

The development comes after India did not travel to Bangladesh last year amid political tensions between the two countries. Bangladesh, in turn, skipped the T20 World Cup hosted in India earlier this year, adding another chapter to the recent strain in cricketing ties.

Government approval remains the key hurdle

While preparations for the series are reportedly underway, the tour cannot move forward without the Centre’s approval.

If permission is granted, India is expected to travel to Bangladesh during the first half of September, with both cricket boards already exploring scheduling options to ensure the series fits into an already packed international calendar.

Afghanistan series could be rescheduled

One of the biggest scheduling challenges is India’s proposed T20I series against Afghanistan, which is currently slated to begin around September 13.

Reports suggest that if the Bangladesh tour is approved, the Afghanistan series may be postponed, creating a two-week window for India’s visit to Bangladesh.

The Afghanistan series is scheduled to be hosted by the Afghanistan Cricket Board, and any change would require coordination between the respective boards.

Dhaka and Chattogram emerge as preferred venues

The report states that the Bangladesh Cricket Board has intentionally kept its major venues available during the first half of September to accommodate the proposed tour.

Dhaka and Chattogram are understood to be the leading choices for hosting the matches. One proposal under discussion is to stage the three T20 Internationals at one venue and the three One-Day Internationals at the other.

Officials have also reportedly explored the possibility of playing only one format if scheduling constraints arise.

Talks held during ICC meeting

Discussions regarding the proposed tour reportedly took place on the sidelines of the recent International Cricket Council (ICC) meetings in London, where representatives from both boards reviewed scheduling possibilities and logistical challenges.

Sources quoted in reports indicated that India’s prior commitment to Afghanistan was one of the major issues discussed during the meetings, although government approval continues to be the deciding factor.

BCCI keen to strengthen cricketing ties

The report further suggests that the BCCI is looking to move past previous differences and maintain healthy relationships with fellow cricket boards.

If approved, the Bangladesh series would mark the resumption of bilateral cricket between the two neighbours after a period of uncertainty and could serve as valuable preparation for both teams ahead of upcoming international assignments.

An official announcement regarding the tour is expected only after the Indian government gives its final clearance.
