Not Shubman Gill! R Ashwin Names the Batter Who Could Become the ‘King of the Subcontinent’…
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has backed Yashasvi Jaiswal as a major force in Asian conditions, highlighting the young opener’s ability to handle spin and build big innings.
Indian cricket has no shortage of batting talent, but Ravichandran Ashwin believes one young batter has the qualities to establish himself as a dominant force in the subcontinent.
While Shubman Gill has emerged as one of India’s most important modern batters and is now a key figure across formats, Ashwin has repeatedly highlighted the special qualities of Yashasvi Jaiswal.
Jaiswal’s rise in Test cricket has been particularly impressive. The left-handed opener has shown a combination of aggression, patience and strong shot selection that makes him dangerous on the slower and turning pitches commonly found in Asia.
Why Ashwin rates Jaiswal highly
One of Jaiswal’s biggest strengths is his approach against spin bowling. Rather than allowing spinners to dictate terms, the young batter is prepared to use his feet, sweep, attack gaps and rotate the strike.
That ability becomes particularly valuable in the subcontinent, where matches can change quickly once the pitch begins to offer turn.

Jaiswal has already produced several memorable performances in such conditions. During India’s 2024 Test series against England, he scored heavily and repeatedly put pressure on England’s spin attack. His double-century in Visakhapatnam was another example of his ability to combine patience with attacking cricket.
His performances have also helped establish him as one of India’s most exciting long-term Test prospects.
A batter built for long innings
What separates Jaiswal from many young attacking batters is his ability to convert starts into substantial scores.
He has shown that he can play the waiting game when required and then accelerate once conditions become favourable. That balance is crucial in Test cricket, particularly in Asia, where a batter may have to spend long periods negotiating spin before taking control of the game.
Ashwin’s assessment carries additional weight because of his own experience. The former India spinner spent more than a decade bowling on subcontinental pitches and became one of the most successful Test bowlers in Asia.
Ashwin retired from international cricket in December 2024 after taking 537 Test wickets, along with more than 3,500 Test runs. His understanding of how batters operate against spin makes his praise of Jaiswal particularly noteworthy.
Gill vs Jaiswal — different strengths
The comparison with Shubman Gill is inevitable, especially as Gill has taken on greater responsibility for India in recent years.
Gill’s technique, timing and ability to play both pace and spin have made him a central part of India’s batting plans. Jaiswal, meanwhile, brings a more naturally aggressive left-handed approach.

Rather than viewing the two as direct rivals, Indian cricket could benefit enormously if both batters continue to develop.
Gill can provide stability and class through the top order, while Jaiswal’s attacking approach can put opposition bowlers under pressure from the beginning.
Jaiswal’s biggest challenge remains overseas cricket
There is, however, one important question still hanging over Jaiswal’s rise.
His strongest body of work has come in subcontinental and Caribbean conditions, while his early experience in South Africa showed that fast, bouncy pitches can present a different challenge. Australian media also noted that his success had largely come in conditions more familiar to him.
That does not take away from his achievements. Instead, it highlights the next stage of his development.
If Jaiswal can consistently reproduce his performances on challenging overseas pitches while maintaining his dominance in Asia, the argument around his place among India’s next generation of great batters will become even stronger.
For now, the signs are encouraging. With age on his side, an aggressive mindset and an increasingly mature Test game, Jaiswal has all the ingredients to become one of the defining batters of India’s next era.
And if Ashwin’s prediction proves right, the subcontinent could soon have a new batting king.
