Afghanistan have officially booked their place at the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup after surviving a tense three-wicket victory over Ireland in the second ODI of their five-match series.

The win not only gave Afghanistan an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series but also confirmed their qualification for the tournament in Southern Africa.

And once again, captain Rashid Khan was at the centre of the action.

Rashid first produced an important spell with the ball before returning during the chase to score an unbeaten 37, calmly guiding Afghanistan over the line with more than five overs remaining.

The result means Afghanistan will appear at the ODI World Cup for the fourth consecutive time, underlining how far the team has come on the international stage.

Rashid’s contribution was crucial from the beginning.

His three wickets helped Afghanistan restrict Ireland to 206, with the Afghan spin attack repeatedly putting pressure on Ireland’s batting order.

After Ireland were reduced to 128 for 8, however, the hosts found an unlikely lifeline through a record ninth-wicket partnership.

Gavin Hoey and Jai Moondra added 76 runs, frustrating Afghanistan’s bowlers and giving Ireland a total that suddenly looked competitive.

Hoey finished as Ireland’s leading scorer with 36, while Moondra made 31 in just his second ODI innings.

The partnership was particularly impressive considering Ireland had appeared to be heading towards a much smaller total.

If Rashid was Afghanistan’s match-winner, Gavin Hoey was the player who made Ireland believe they could pull off a major upset.

The young leg-spinner produced a career-best 4/34, using flight, dip and sharp turn to trouble Afghanistan’s middle order.

His biggest breakthrough came when he dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who had made a crucial 71.

Hoey’s spell brought Ireland back into the contest after Afghanistan had appeared comfortable.

He also received useful support from Mark Adair, whose seam movement continued to create problems for the Afghan batters.

But once Hoey completed his spell in the 33rd over, Ireland struggled to maintain the same pressure.
