Heinrich Malan steps down as Ireland coach just one day after the team’s historic T20I series sweep over India.

In a surprising turn of events, Ireland head coach Heinrich Malan has stepped down from his role with immediate effect, barely a day after guiding the team to a historic 2-0 T20I series victory over India.

The announcement has sent shockwaves through the cricketing world, especially considering Malan’s contract was due to run until early 2027. However, the 45-year-old South African decided it was the right time to move on, believing a new leader should take charge ahead of Ireland’s crucial ODI World Cup qualification campaign next year.

Malan, who joined Cricket Ireland in January 2022, quickly transformed the team into a competitive force on the international stage. His original three-year contract was extended in 2024 after a string of notable performances.

Under his leadership, Ireland qualified for three consecutive T20 World Cups in 2022, 2024, and 2026 marking a period of consistency and growth for the side. One of the standout moments of his tenure came during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Melbourne, where Ireland stunned eventual champions England in a memorable upset.

His coaching stint also saw Ireland register all three of their Test victories, including landmark wins against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi and Zimbabwe in Belfast.

Reflecting on his journey, Malan said it had been an “absolute privilege” to work with the players and staff, adding that his family would cherish their time in Irish cricket.

He also looked back proudly on several major achievements, including wins over cricketing heavyweights like Pakistan, West Indies, and South Africa, alongside their recent triumph over India.

The resignation comes on the heels of one of Ireland’s most dramatic T20I wins. In the second match of the series, Ireland defended 154 runs to seal victory by just one run, completing a clean sweep over the Indian side.

Young bowler Jai Moondra starred with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 32 runs, while Tilak Varma’s fighting 55 wasn’t enough to rescue India after a shaky start in the chase. Ireland’s innings was built on crucial contributions from Harry Tector and Calitz, helping the hosts post 154/8.

Looking ahead, Ireland will host Afghanistan in a five-match ODI series in August, while Team India now shifts focus to the next leg of its European tour with a challenging assignment in England.

Malan’s departure marks the end of a memorable era for Irish cricket one that elevated the team’s standing and delivered some of the biggest moments in the nation’s cricketing history.
