England Drop Ben Stokes Amid Nightclub Controversy Joe Root Returns as Captain for Crucial Test
ECB sidelines Stokes and Atkinson as investigation continues; Root steps in to lead England against New Zealand at The Oval
Ben Stokes has been left out of England’s squad for the second Test against New Zealand national cricket team, with Joe Root appointed as interim captain.
The decision, confirmed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), comes as an investigation continues into an alleged breach of team protocols involving Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson.
Why Was Ben Stokes Dropped?
According to the ECB, both Stokes and Atkinson have been “not made available for selection” following reports that they violated a midnight curfew after the first Test at Lord’s Cricket Ground.
The situation escalated after the duo were reportedly involved in an incident at a nightclub in Chelsea, where a confrontation allegedly took place involving a member of the team’s security staff.
The controversy has not only sidelined England’s captain but also raised serious questions about discipline within the squad.
Joe Root Takes Charge Again
Stepping into the leadership role is Joe Root, one of England’s most experienced cricketers. The 35-year-old previously captained England in 64 Test matches between 2017 and 2022.
Although Harry Brook—the current vice-captain—was seen as a potential replacement, the ECB opted for Root’s experience and calm leadership.

“Joe Root will lead the team as Interim Captain,” the ECB confirmed in its official statement.
The second Test is set to begin at the The Oval from June 17.
Squad Changes: Archer Returns, New Faces Added
In addition to leadership changes, England have reshuffled their squad. Star pacer Jofra Archer makes a return, while uncapped batter Jordan Cox has earned a call-up.
They replace Stokes and Atkinson in the 15-man squad, as England look to maintain momentum after their 115-run victory in the first Test.

Stokes’ Future in Doubt?
The controversy has sparked speculation about Stokes’ long-term future in international cricket. Reports suggest the all-rounder is currently at home, reflecting on his next steps while the investigation unfolds.
“His future is up in the air… even he may not know what he wants to do,” a source close to the team indicated.
The incident has also drawn criticism within cricketing circles, particularly because Stokes himself had been instrumental in enforcing stricter discipline rules following England’s past struggles.
A Distraction England Didn’t Need
Despite England’s strong start to the series, the off-field drama has overshadowed their performance. The team management, including head coach Brendon McCullum and director Rob Key, now face the challenge of maintaining focus amid growing scrutiny.
The coming Test will not just test England’s cricketing strength—but also their unity and discipline.
