Sonal Dinusha Creates History vs India, Becomes First Asian to Achieve Rare Test Feat
Sri Lanka’s 24-year-old sensation begins his Test career against India with four consecutive 50-plus scores, joining an elite list featuring Weekes, Walcott, Jardine and Barrington
Sri Lanka all-rounder Sonal Dinusha has added another remarkable record to his sensational start in Test cricket, becoming the first Asian batter to score at least 50 runs in each of his first four Test innings against India.
The 24-year-old achieved the milestone during the second innings of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka at the Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) in Colombo, completing his half-century from 99 deliveries during the morning session on Day 5.
What makes the achievement even more impressive is Dinusha’s extraordinary consistency since making his Test debut against Shubman Gill-led India.
His first four innings against the visitors have produced scores of 100, 84, 103 and 50-plus, meaning India are yet to dismiss him for fewer than 50 runs in Test cricket.
Sonal Dinusha’s dream start against India
Dinusha announced himself on the international stage during the opening Test of the series in Galle.
The left-handed batter struck 100 in the first innings, becoming a centurion on Test debut, before following it with an impressive 84 in the second innings.
Any suggestion that his performance in Galle was a one-off quickly disappeared when the series moved to Colombo.
Dinusha produced another superb knock in Sri Lanka’s first innings at the SSC, scoring 103 and registering his second Test century in only his third innings against India.
Then came his fourth successive 50-plus score on Day 5.
With Sri Lanka battling to save the Test after being asked to follow on, Dinusha once again delivered when his team needed him most.
First Asian batter to achieve the feat
Dinusha’s latest half-century placed him in an exceptionally small group.
He became only the fifth batter in Test history to register scores of 50 or more in each of his first four innings against India — and crucially, the first Asian cricketer to do so.
Before Dinusha, the feat had been achieved by England’s Douglas Jardine and Ken Barrington, along with legendary West Indies batters Everton Weekes and Clyde Walcott.
Barrington was the most recent player before Dinusha to accomplish the feat, having registered four consecutive 50-plus scores against India in 1959.
Dinusha has now ended a wait of more than six decades for another batter to join the exclusive club.

The company Dinusha finds himself in underlines just how unusual his achievement is.
Weekes, one of the greatest batters of his generation, produced an extraordinary sequence that included four successive centuries against India. He eventually extended his 50-plus streak to five innings, scoring 90 in his fifth.
Jardine also registered 50 or more in each of his first five innings against India.
Another historic record within Dinusha’s reach
Dinusha’s fourth innings also gave him an opportunity to chase an even bigger piece of Test history.
Having already scored centuries in Galle and Colombo, another hundred in Sri Lanka’s second innings would give him three centuries across his first two Tests against India.
No batter has previously achieved that feat.
Dinusha’s numbers are particularly striking considering he is still at the very beginning of his international career. Facing an Indian bowling attack in his first Test series could have represented one of the toughest introductions possible, but the left-hander has instead made himself one of Sri Lanka’s standout performers.

Dinusha plays crucial role in Sri Lanka’s resistance
His innings was about more than individual records.
India had posted a massive 503/9 declared before bowling Sri Lanka out for 290, giving the visitors a 213-run first-innings advantage.
India subsequently enforced the follow-on, leaving Sri Lanka with a huge task simply to stay alive in the contest.
The hosts, however, produced a determined second-innings fightback, with Dinusha playing a central role in frustrating the Indian attack.
His ability to absorb pressure and occupy the crease proved particularly important as Sri Lanka attempted to deny India the victory they needed for a 2-0 series sweep.
A new Sri Lankan star emerging?
Four innings are far too few to define a Test career, but Dinusha could hardly have asked for a more impressive beginning against one of world cricket’s strongest teams.
Starting with 100 and 84 in Galle, following that with 103 in Colombo, and then registering another half-century under the pressure of a follow-on has immediately placed the young Sri Lankan among some celebrated names in Test history.
Records will inevitably attract attention, but it is Dinusha’s consistency that stands out most.
Four Test innings against India. Four scores of 50 or more. Two centuries already.
For Sri Lanka, those numbers could be an early indication that they have unearthed another exciting long-term prospect.
