India vs Sri Lanka 2nd Test: Gill’s Men Win Series 1-0, But Colombo Draw Leaves WTC Final Hopes in Trouble

Colombo: India walked away from Sri Lanka with a 1-0 Test series victory, but the celebrations came with a sense of unfinished business. The second and final Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo ended in a draw on Thursday after Sri Lanka produced a stubborn final-day resistance to deny Shubman Gill’s side what had once looked like an almost certain victory.

India had dominated much of the contest. After winning the toss and batting first, the visitors piled up 503/9 declared before dismissing Sri Lanka for 290, securing a commanding 213-run first-innings lead.

Gill then enforced the follow-on, putting India in a position to push for a clean 2-0 series sweep.

Sri Lanka, however, refused to surrender.

The hosts fought their way to 429/9 from 154 overs in their second innings, building a lead of 216 runs. With an Indian victory no longer realistically possible, the two captains eventually agreed to a draw.

Sonal Dinusha turns the Test on its head

At the heart of Sri Lanka’s dramatic resistance was Sonal Dinusha, who produced a memorable performance under enormous pressure.

Dinusha remained unbeaten on 133 from 264 deliveries, frustrating an Indian bowling attack that spent much of the final day searching for the wickets needed to complete the victory. Remarkably, it was his second century of the match, following his first-innings hundred.

He found crucial support from Keshara Nuwantha, who scored 46, with the pair adding 112 runs for the seventh wicket. Their resistance helped turn what had appeared to be a near-certain Sri Lankan defeat into a hard-earned draw.

Dinusha was subsequently named Player of the Match, while India’s Devdutt Padikkal was named Player of the Series.

India win series, but miss out on 2-0 sweep

Despite the disappointment in Colombo, India still secured the two-match Test series 1-0.

The visitors had won the opening Test in Galle by 165 runs, giving Gill’s young side a valuable away series victory. But after taking such a dominant position in the second Test, failing to complete the sweep will leave India wondering what might have been.

Sri Lanka’s escape was historic in its own right. Before the Colombo Test, the island nation had lost all eight Tests against India in which they had been asked to follow on. This was the first time they managed to save one.

Colombo draw hurts India’s WTC Final hopes

The biggest consequence for India, however, lies beyond the series result.

The draw dealt a significant blow to the team’s chances of reaching the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 Final.

India received four WTC points from the draw, compared with the 12 points they would have collected for a victory. They remain fifth in the WTC standings, with their points percentage dropping to around 51.52%.

India have now recorded five victories and two draws from 11 Tests in the current championship cycle.

With only seven Tests remaining, the road to the WTC Final has become considerably more difficult. India will next face New Zealand in a two-Test series in November, followed by a crucial five-Test series against Australia.

Shubman Gill still believes India can reach WTC Final

Despite the setback, captain Shubman Gill remained positive about India’s chances.

Speaking after the match, Gill praised Sri Lanka’s resistance and said India had done virtually everything possible to force a result. Reflecting on the absorbing contest, the skipper summed it up by saying “Test cricket won today.”

Gill also made it clear that India have not given up on reaching the WTC Final.

The captain pointed towards the upcoming New Zealand and Australia assignments as opportunities for his side to recover lost ground, saying India would continue believing as long as qualification remained mathematically possible.

A draw that will feel very different for both teams

For Sri Lanka, the Colombo draw will feel almost like a victory. After conceding a 213-run first-innings deficit and being asked to follow on, surviving the match required patience, discipline and a remarkable batting effort.

For India, the emotions will be more complicated.

A 1-0 away series victory remains a positive result, particularly for a relatively young Test side. But having controlled the second Test for long periods, India missed an opportunity to secure a 2-0 clean sweep and strengthen their position in the World Test Championship.

The series belongs to India, but Sonal Dinusha and Sri Lanka had the final word in Colombo.
