Director Gurmmeet Singh has confirmed that Mirzapur will return after Mirzapur: The Movie, while refusing to rule out the possibility of a larger connected universe.

The violent and unpredictable world of Mirzapur may have plenty of life left in it.

After expanding from a hugely popular streaming series to the big screen with Mirzapur: The Movie, director Gurmmeet Singh has now teased the franchise’s future — and his comments suggest the makers are not ready to leave Mirzapur behind anytime soon.

While there is no official announcement about the exact format of the next instalment, Gurmmeet has made one thing clear: Mirzapur is expected to return.

Is a bigger Mirzapur universe coming?

During an interaction with SCREEN, Gurmmeet was asked whether Mirzapur could eventually grow into a larger connected universe, potentially allowing characters and stories to cross over between different projects.

His answer was brief but enough to keep speculation alive.

“Never say never,” the director said.

Gurmmeet stopped short of confirming a spin-off or connected-universe project. However, he was considerably more certain when discussing whether audiences would see Mirzapur again.

“So, I don’t know what the Mirzapur gods have lined up for us next, but I know that Mirzapur is going to come back,” he said.

“Whatever happens, it’ll be interesting. Which way it’ll go, hopefully we’ll explore that right now.”

For fans, that leaves several possibilities open. The franchise could return with another theatrical film, a new streaming season or potentially an entirely different project. As of now, however, the makers have not formally announced which direction they will take.

CBFC changes for Mirzapur: The Movie

Taking Mirzapur from streaming to cinemas also brought a new challenge for its creators: theatrical certification.

The franchise is known for its adult themes, violence and strong language, but a theatrical release meant the filmmakers had to work within the guidelines of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Gurmmeet revealed that some portions of the movie had to be reworked during the certification process.

“We were mindful of the guidelines. There were certain things that we had to rework according to those guidelines,” he said.

According to the director, CBFC officials were familiar with Mirzapur’s reputation as a pop-culture phenomenon and understood what audiences expected from an adults-only film.

However, he said the board also raised concerns about the practical difficulty of preventing underage viewers from entering screenings of adult-rated movies across the country.

Gurmmeet described the certification process as stringent, while noting that the board was also conscious of evolving storytelling sensibilities.

Mirzapur: The Movie crosses Rs 270 crore India gross

Meanwhile, Mirzapur: The Movie has continued its theatrical run after releasing on September 4.

According to figures attributed to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film has crossed the Rs 270 crore mark in India gross collections as it completes its fourth week in cinemas.

Interestingly, Gurmmeet revealed that he has not been obsessively tracking the film’s day-to-day box-office performance.

The director said Excel Productions offered to add him to a WhatsApp group used to monitor the movie’s collection numbers, but he chose not to join.

Mirzapur brings together a massive cast

Mirzapur: The Movie features several familiar names associated with the franchise alongside other prominent performers.

The cast includes Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Jitendra Kumar, Rasika Dugal, Shweta Tripathi, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Abhishek Banerjee and Mohitt Maalik.

With the franchise successfully making the transition from streaming to theatres, attention is now inevitably turning towards what the creators will attempt next.

Gurmmeet’s comments confirm that the story of Mirzapur is not finished yet, but the bigger mystery remains unanswered: Will audiences get another movie, a streaming return, or the beginning of an even larger Mirzapur universe?

For now, the makers are keeping that answer under wraps.
