Nancy Guthrie Mystery Deepens, Viral Photo of Son-in-Law Sparks ‘Porch Guy’ Speculation Despite Police Clarification
Online theories intensify after self-styled investigator shares image of Tommaso Cioni; authorities reiterate family not under suspicion
The disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie continues to raise questions, as a fresh wave of online speculation has emerged following the circulation of a photograph of her son-in-law Tommaso Cioni.
Nancy, who went missing in early February from her home in Catalina Foothills near Tucson, Arizona, has yet to be found. Authorities believe she was likely taken from her residence the night before her family reported her disappearance.
Adding a new dimension to the case, self-styled investigator Jonathan Lee Riches shared a photograph of Cioni on social media platform X, where he is seen standing among plants. In the post, Riches claimed “He’s the last known person to be with Nancy Guthrie before she vanished”, referring to the night Cioni reportedly dropped her home after dinner.
However, the timing and context of the image remain unclear, as Riches did not specify when the photograph was taken.
Nancy had spent the evening with her daughter Annie Guthrie and Cioni before returning home. Since then, sections of the public have speculated about the family’s involvement—despite repeated clarifications from authorities.
Chris Nanos, Sheriff of Pima County Sheriff’s Department, has categorically stated that no members of the Guthrie family are suspects in the case. Supporting this, TV personality Savannah Guthrie—Nancy’s granddaughter—also dismissed the rumours, asserting that the family deeply cared for her.

Despite official statements, the viral photo has reignited online discussions. Some social media users drew comparisons between Cioni and a mysterious figure dubbed “porch guy”, who was captured in surveillance footage near Nancy’s home on the night before her disappearance.

The footage, released with assistance from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, shows a masked individual approaching Nancy’s front door. This person remains a key figure in the ongoing investigation.
Reacting to the image, some users speculated similarities, with one claiming “Just like porch guy…”, while others pointed out inconsistencies, noting differences in physical features such as tattoos.
Authorities, however, have urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified claims and to rely on official updates. The investigation remains active, with law enforcement agencies continuing their search for answers in the case.
As the mystery deepens, the case highlights the growing impact of social media speculation on ongoing investigations—often blurring the line between public curiosity and misinformation.
