A routine journey from Greece to Germany turned into a life-or-death struggle when a passenger was pulled toward an aircraft opening mid-flight, forcing his wife and fellow travellers into a desperate rescue.
‘If We Die, We Die Together’: Wife Recalls Terrifying Mid-Air Rescue
What was supposed to be an ordinary flight across Europe turned into an unforgettable nightmare after a 61-year-old passenger was partially sucked out of a Ryanair-operated Malta Air aircraft, leaving his wife fighting with everything she had to save his life.
The frightening incident occurred on a flight travelling from Thessaloniki, Greece, to Memmingen, Germany, just minutes after take-off. According to flight tracking information and eyewitness accounts, the aircraft suddenly lost around 9,000 feet (2,700 metres) in altitude, creating panic inside the cabin.
Amid the chaos, Ljubisa Karović found himself being pulled toward an opening in the aircraft, with a large portion of his body outside the plane. His wife, Svetlana Grković, reacted instantly without thinking about her own safety.
Recalling those terrifying moments, she said that only one thought echoed in her mind: “If we die, we die together.”
A Wife’s Courage in the Face of Disaster
Svetlana described the horrifying sight of seeing her husband hanging outside the aircraft.
According to her account, half of his body was outside the plane, while she desperately held onto his legs to prevent him from being completely swept away by the powerful airflow.
The struggle was anything but easy. During the rescue, Karović reportedly lost consciousness multiple times, making it even harder for his wife to pull him back inside.
Fortunately, two fellow passengers immediately rushed to help. Together, they managed to drag him back into the cabin before the situation became even more tragic.

Seatbelt May Have Saved His Life
Passengers on board later revealed that Karović had kept his seatbelt fastened, a detail that may have played a crucial role in preventing him from being pulled entirely out of the aircraft.
Several passengers reportedly held onto him while his upper body remained exposed to the intense wind outside the plane.
The incident has been described by eyewitnesses as one of the most terrifying experiences they had ever witnessed during a commercial flight.
Victim Remains Hospitalised
Following the emergency, the aircraft landed safely, and Karović was rushed to a hospital in Greece, where he continues to receive treatment.
His wife said he remains seriously injured and traumatised. She revealed that he has suffered severe injuries to one of his hands along with burns and is still unable to properly communicate.

Even more heartbreaking, she said her husband has no memory of the terrifying incident, likely due to the trauma he experienced.
Despite his condition, Svetlana remains grateful for one reason above everything else.
“The important thing is that he’s alive,” she said.
Gratitude for Unknown Heroes
While speaking about the rescue, Svetlana also expressed heartfelt appreciation for the passengers who stepped in without hesitation.
She especially remembered a man whom she believes was from Albania, saying his quick actions were instrumental in saving her husband’s life.
Although she never learned his name, she hopes to find him one day so she can personally thank him for helping save their family from unimaginable tragedy.
Her emotional tribute has touched thousands, with many praising not only the bravery of the unnamed passengers but also the extraordinary courage she displayed during one of the most frightening moments imaginable.
A Story of Survival and Humanity
The dramatic rescue serves as a reminder that courage often appears in ordinary people during extraordinary circumstances. What began as a terrifying aviation emergency ultimately became a powerful story of love, resilience, compassion, and survival.
