Shreyas Iyer’s India captaincy under threat already? England series could decide his fate

Despite being backed as a long-term T20I leader by chief selector Ajit Agarkar, Shreyas Iyer could face an early leadership review if results don’t improve.

Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy could come under review if India struggle in upcoming T20I assignments.

Just months after being named India’s T20I captain with a long-term roadmap in mind, Shreyas Iyer is already facing questions over his future.

When chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced Iyer’s appointment, he made it clear that the move was part of India’s preparation for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2028, signalling stability and continuity in leadership.

But in Indian cricket, long-term plans often depend on short-term results.

And right now, the pressure is building.

Surprise appointment, immediate criticism

Iyer’s appointment itself had raised eyebrows.

The middle-order batter had not been a regular in India’s T20I setup for nearly three years, making his sudden elevation to captaincy a surprising call for many.

That scrutiny only intensified after India suffered a shock defeat to Ireland cricket team — their first-ever T20I loss against the side — under Iyer’s leadership.

The result sparked immediate criticism, with many questioning whether the selectors had rushed the decision.

England series could change everything

India are currently in the middle of a crucial five-match T20I series against England cricket team, with the opening match washed out due to rain.

That means the remaining four games now carry even greater weight.

A poor showing against England could significantly increase the pressure on Iyer and potentially force the Board of Control for Cricket in India to reconsider its plans.

Reports suggest that with a second-string squad likely for the Zimbabwe tour, the Asian Games 2026 could become the next major leadership test for Iyer.

Bigger challenges still ahead

Even if India navigate England successfully, the road ahead remains difficult.

The team is scheduled to face both West Indies cricket team and New Zealand cricket team in back-to-back five-match T20I series later this year.

Those contests are expected to be crucial in shaping India’s T20 plans moving forward.

Strong performances could strengthen Iyer’s grip on the captaincy.

But inconsistent results could trigger fresh debates.

It’s not just about captaincy

Iyer’s own batting form will also be under the scanner.

In modern cricket, leadership is increasingly tied to individual performance, and the Indian team management has shown in the past that captaincy changes can happen quickly if a player’s overall impact drops.

For now, the backing from Agarkar remains intact.

But with England, West Indies, and New Zealand all lined up in a packed calendar, the next few months could define whether Shreyas Iyer remains India’s long-term T20I captain — or becomes another short-lived experiment.
